Number of cases doesn't track with the number of hospitalizations or deaths anymore now that so many vulnerable people are vaccinated so the raw case count is becoming less important every day.

I would still like to see the US daily deaths be under 300 or so. Right now we would still be looking at 170-200k yearly deaths if these rates continued. Fortunately it is trending down.

I think the media decides what fear-porn news to boost/amplify when convenient. I don't think it's a conspiracy that kids can get COVID. We all know they can.

So I’m a little confused.  The numbers of people under 30 contacting Covid are increasing? Those are CDC numbers from what I understand. If they do get it , very little risk though as far as death/long term problems. That has been pretty well documented     It happens sometimes but so does getting hit by a bus

So what?

This is being boosted as news for a reason. Case numbers are literally used to scare people into compliance. Otherwise, they are meaningless without a lot of context.

They did the same thing last spring and summer with the talk over spring breakers and Kawasaki syndrome as justification for why schools needed to stay closed.

I am not denying the facts, I am discussing the how/when/why of news being boosted sometimes and buried other times.

Per the IHME model (which I was a little skeptical of last summer but it's actually been quite solid overall) we probably won't drop below 500 deaths a day for perhaps another month. Projections are for them to remain steady or slightly increase moving into the first week of May. The model has been wavering back and forth with the <500 threshold but I think that is mostly due to some of the new variants. I can see an increase over the next few weeks b/c overall serious/critical cases have risen over the past few weeks. Also per the model, daily infections should really start plummeting moving through the final weeks of April

At least personally, the lack of an endgame is driving vaccine hesitancy. My buddies exact quote the other day was “why would I get the vaccine when I’m still going to have to wear a mask and distance etc etc”

He’s not really wrong. Why get the vaccine if nothing will change because of it?

At least at work.... people who are fully vaccinated are still being put through the same rigors as people who aren’t. This includes constant masking, testing 1 to 2 times per week.

I mean, you aren’t even dangling the carrot of “back to normal” at this point, really.

Lockdowns are starting to come back to Asia, Europe, and Canada too. I hope the US keeps reopening and doesn't backslide into that crap again.

It’s coming. “Normalcy” will return in increments, not all at once.  The push is on, especially with more and more getting vaccinated and summer economies dependent on people being out.

Doubt it.  Most places didn't fully shut down this winter despite surging cases.   But I agree, it's time to move on.   We flattened the curve which was the original goal, not to eradicate the virus.

Unless we get a deathlier mutation, I think we are going forward, I predict by June 1st all 50 states are open with no mask mandates outside, inside might still be some hangover but mostly we are moving on, there might be some scare tactics around memorial day but I think most folks will ignore them, >50% vaccinated ~ 20- 30% have had the virus... we should be good!

Not you per se ( I am not speaking to you personally, but your post's content, because I'm seeing this dissension out in society more and more, et all...) but it strikes me as selfish/self-absorbed/'What's in it for me' -ism, frankly -

I mean ...part and parcel to survival, has to come down to that question at some point or the other.   We are not there yet - apprehension to get vaccine is not a challenge or threat to those prospects.

If people were not with their AVR compasses pointed so internally, they might be in a frame of mentality that allows them to either see ... failing that, 'suspect' that there is a bigger canvas here that doesn't require whether they, themselves, have a convenienced fortune that is satisfying.

Vax to protect society as a whole - that's still the over-arcing, socially responsible thematic virtuosity ... Not saying its right, but that's the mantra in the air.  It seems the dissenting opinion removes that key cognitive awareness, when in the process of rendering the decision not to vax if they can't get their candy back for doing it.. sort of like that -

everyone's ignoring most of the stuff here now (except masks indoors) example-  Grocery stores still have the one way stickers on the floor and 6 feet markers by the checkouts...worthless...

Even during the big spike this winter,  big grocery stores had already stopped counting customers at the door.

I keep reading and hearing about "variants" plural, as if there are many and popping up every day. The only ones I've heard of is the UK B.1.1.7 and SA variants and I believe the UK one is the dominant one at this point. The problem is that the US is terrible at doing widespread sequencing to confirm what is actually present and where.

the media is basically a big embarrassment and people have been encouraged to become soft as grapes. Then throw politics and where one side says something is nothing the other side says it's the "worst thing ever"...one side says xyz never occurs the other side xyz are assumed racists....it's a cesspool that manifests what it acts like it try's to bring to "light". Media thrives on ratings which gives them lots of incentive$ to spin things to any assumption that elevates emotions. It's tried and true. Nobody holds them accountable for the division they amplify or the think like this or else attitude they promote. Bianary thinking is a common result.  I mean so many peoples opinions are formed by spin masters for ratings/ profit.

No one ever paid attention to those stickers. Interesting idea at first, but after a week or two largely ignored, and stores at that time were more concerned with disinfecting carriages and checkout lines. I'll be curious to see how many businesses continue with the precautions in a month from now like restaurants with the plastic dividers, gyms with all of their PITA rules, etc.

I think you're right. Even old Mr. fear mongorer himself Ashish Jha said in a Globe article yesterday its time to end the outdoor mandates. Articles in Slate and the Atlantic said the same thing. If those publications are on board, then its just a matter of time.

Not sure about open. I guess it depends on how one defines "open"

Depends where you were I guess.  The market I go to had the arrows until a few weeks ago. Most people followed them when it was crowded and less so when the store was empty.  Those are gone now

We were just in a Walmart and a few of the aisles still had them but only at one end which is useless anyway

I would say Mass drops those before Mother’s Day.   Maybe by May 1.  No one really follows them anyway.  And if someone doesn’t the police etc don’t care

A few Karen’s maybe

It’s entertainment for ratings.  I just followed everyone’s advice last summer and stopped watching.  Much better, ha.

Some though just can’t stop... some seem to watch it just to get outraged, lol.  It’s like, this makes you so miserable, why do you do it?  Can’t stop watching the train wreck.

I stopped watching all political news. I don't follow any of it at this point. I never have any idea what Congress is up to.
