She's been back for a few weeks now

I always believe banned people come back under different names. It depends what sort of ban the website uses but many are easy to get around and the only way to recognize the person is either by posting style or sometimes the server they are posting from. But given most here are in the NY area that wouldn't really tell much

Yeah. It gives you the option to ban by username and or by IP address. You can easily spoof an IP address.

Some people just don't like winter, indeed some folks suffer from a form of seasonal depression. But they generally don't hang out around forums where people actually like such weather. So why do folks like you and Marsplex, who seem like reasonable people, hang out here? Is it to see if winter will end early? Serious question, as my primary sociological interest is in snow weenies, there are too many warm lovers to make that interesting...

I'm just a fan of weather/climate in general, I become a little less interested in the winter as my main interests are warm weather phenomena like heat, thunderstorms, tornados, and hurricanes. But I do learn a lot during the winter since this is when the board is the most active. But as much as I hate the cold, I do like a little bit of snow here and there, and even a major storm every once in a while.

The cold/snow obsession does become unbearable at times though, last winter was torturous.

Hi.

You're all going to be gaining me as a regular poster sometime in June, because I'm going to be a teacher in NYC.

Whether or not you want to take this as a good thing is of your choosing.

I am sorry to hear that you will be taking on such a thankless task. You will be held responsible for all of society's ills, and be expected to solve them. For a pittance. And you will be accused of only having a part time job with full time pay. This will weigh heavily on your mind when you come home from school and collapse from exhaustion. You will have days where you interact with the police, fire dept and first aid squad in the same day. And when the test scores do not go up, they will say it is because you are incompetent. Might as well know this going in. Good luck, you will need it. Schedule an appointment with a therapist. It will help.

I would watch the period after that cutter. There could be a big low that forms along the boundary. It all depends on where that stationary boundary sets up. I think there's some potential there.

the GFS and CMC are showing the exact same thing.e5a71d280a9d75e7533aeef7ad3ee737.jpge7ad622f0c1f45389e08d89725d81804.jpgb17a0810a987ca15eb71a01a1c27c999.jpghopefully this trends bigger for now it looks like a 3-6 inch event for next Friday!

I'm also a fan of warm weather, but I love the outdoors and weather plays an enormous role in my primary hobby of birding.  This place gives a lot of early warning on what to expect!  I don't have any seasonal depression, but winter is physically and financially painful.  My fingers hurt, my muscles stiffen up when I'm outdoors for hours as happens when birding.  And even worse is when I cannot get outside at all, when it is super cold, when, despite layers upon layers, it's just too painful. Then, it's confinement indoors getting nosebleeds from overly dry air.  Last year too, I suffered a moderate rotator cuff injury clearing ice off my car roof and had to go to physical therapy for 8 weeks.  Financially, I took a hit of around $800 over the last two years from additional snow assessment fees, not to mention maybe another $500 in unusually high heating bills. So, not a fan of winter.

Still, the drama of a big nor'easter snow is mesmerizing.  I like the rainy ones too!  I like weather itself, being at a hawkwatch in when a front sweeps through is an amazing experience.  Did you know there is a "cloud appreciation society" online - as you might expect, it is British.  Birders are fixated on weather in spring and fall, looking for the right combination of winds that will bring a big migratory flight.  Winter brings the most opportunities for rarities. But, right now, because of the rather mild weather north of here, the ducks have not really arrived in big numbers, and the even more northerly visitors are just making an appearance offshore.

But winter hurts!  And it's confining!  So, I find myself rooting for a mild winter here, a cold one north of here, and an early enough warmup that I can plant some cold-tolerant vegetables soon!  Groundhog, please, no shadow.

PS:  I also enjoy the entertaining bristling and snarling among the posters here.  And appreciate the various analyses!

Well said. I got into weather during my fishing days, as good fishing is so weather dependent. In those years I couldn't wait for winter to be over, so I could get out on the water again. Winter does hurt, but then, I am in pain most of the time from several conditions, and since I must generally avoid too much sun, summer is the season that has become the one I want to get over with the most. A history teacher I work with is a missionary and birder and so goes all over the world seeing different birds. He says he knows the guys that Jack Black movie was based on. Probably BS, but missionaries wouldn't lie....

Yes, weather is even more critical to fishing. Surfing, sailing, gardening. I wonder how many here are wrapped up in outdoor hobbies!  And the models and measurements are wonderful, but there's also lot of gratification in the immediate weather, that relies on one's own senses - you can smell rain coming, you can hear differently in different weather conditions, you can feel humidity changes on your skin. All very interesting.

As for the Jack Black movie, it's very likely he does  know them, since those guys frequently appear at birding festivals and go on eco-tours with all the big companies.

Yeah he probably does know them, I forget how insular some worlds are...I mean I know one of the guys on Wicked Tuna from when he was a kid working the decks of the party boats in Atlantic Highlands.

What do you make of the theory that climate change provides more moisture for these storms? I don't remember so many storms of this magnitude in the 70's and 80's.....Kocin and Ucellini could write a whole new book on storms since 2005....

it could be because of more moisture in the air from melting polar ice...the warmer it is the more moisture can be in the air...I still think they measured snow differently than we do now back in the early days and when I was growing up...

Absolutely. It's unconscionable to think there are people eating such sandwiches without ketchup. At least in Jersey, it's called porkrolleggandcheeseonahardrollwitsaltpepperandketchup - all one word.

Congrats on making an egg sandwich sound awful. That's very hard to do.

Uncle, another interesting list, my question is this. You list on here the December 1947 storm had 26.4 inches of snow. I have seen that storm listed as 25.8 inches and also as 26.4 inches. Do you know why different places seem to post different amounts? And do you know which one is correct if either? I know you've posted before that the snow depth from that storm was 26 inches the day after it fell. If that's the case I would guess at least 30 inches fell if they measured properly at six hour intervals.
