Persistent banding there, while just north we were sucking subsidence exhaust lol. Still looked real nice with the trees all white...but watching radar last night I had a funny feeling that's what was happening. Had only 2.5" or thereabouts at 3000ft so it must've been some mid-level banding subsidence because it didn't seem terrain oriented. Just a low spot in this area. Pond frozen and Newfound Lake looks a long long way to ice out which is usually 4/20. Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations: New Snow: 0.9 inches New Liquid: 0.12 inches Snow/Water Ratio: 7.5 Snow Density: 13.3% H2O Temperature: 30.2 F Sky: Snow (1-12 mm flakes) Snow at the stake: 6.0 inches Snow totals fell off pretty quickly as I headed west into Bolton Flats, and in the town of Bolton itself it only looked like there was an inch or two of new snow. I stopped up at the mountain for ski on my way into Burlington, and at Bolton Valley’s Timberline base at 1,500’ I found only 3-4” of new snow. That was essentially the same as what we picked up at the house, and it doesn’t seem like there was much increase in accumulations above that either. At 2,100’ at the main base area, and even up around 2,700’ on the slopes, I couldn’t find much more. Snow totals seemed the least in the zone heading westward from Bolton to around Richmond, and then they increased again as I got into the Champlain Valley. I’m not sure exactly why the snow stuck to the trees so well in the Burlington area relative to other towns to the east, but it was unquestionably the most picturesque area I saw west of the mountains. Eyewall’s pictures do a great job of showing how beautiful this snowfall was in the Burlington area. For those Vermont ski areas currently reporting, here’s the north to south listing of available snowfall totals from this storm: Jay Peak: 5” Burke: 3” Smuggler’s Notch: 3” Stowe: 3” Bolton Valley: 5” Mad River Glen: 4” Sugarbush: 5” Pico: 3” Killington: 3” Okemo: 2” Stratton: 1” Mount Snow: 0” On a seasonal note, this storm has brought April snowfall up into the average range, and pushed snowfall for 2014-2015 past the 140” mark. That’s still well off average pace, and very unlikely to get there at this stage of the season. In fact, as it stands right now, the past three seasons are all low on snowfall, but conspicuously close with 144.2”, 142.9”, and 143.4” of snow in chronological order. That would fit with what I brought up in the other thread looking at the Mansfield COOP snowfall totals. Although they make me cringe, the snowfall totals at the COOP generally fit with what we've seen lately. That the past few seasons have all been very similar in terms of total snowfall, and below normal. powderfreak Posted April 9, 2015 Share Posted April 9, 2015 The most telling stat I can see though, is the Mansfield COOP hasn't exceeded 200" in 6 years now. Prior to the last 6 years, it exceeded 200" in 11 out of 14 winters. So definitely a little slump up here the past few winters... no doubt about it. Though there is precedence...as the COOP went from 1985-1991 without clearing 200" too. It'll cycle up again though. *This is not a complaint, just musing and its interesting to look over the data, as much as I cringe at the collection method. It is a long period of record though. Maybe the last snow of the season? Looking forward to 60F every day next week and rapid greenup Edit 645pm snow grains have ended now regular light snow vis 3/4 miles and 30.7F. With a good breeze blowing its blowing off the roof. Didn't think atmosphere would be cold enough for snow at this point. All dirt surfaces are coated now. I cleared the boards when I was heading off to bed around midnight, figuring I wouldn’t be able to get a core out of the accumulation if it melted, but there was minimal rain as far as I could see. The 12:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. observations are detailed below: Details from the 12:00 A.M. Waterbury observations: New Snow: 0.3 inches (sleet) New Liquid: 0.14 inches Snow/Water Ratio: 2.1 Snow Density: 46.7% H2O Temperature: 34.2 F Sky: Sleet Snow at the stake: 4.5 inches Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations: New Snow: 0.3 inches (sleet) New Liquid: 0.19 inches Snow/Water Ratio: 1.6 Snow Density: 63.3% H2O Temperature: 35.1 F Sky: Cloudy with sprinkles Snow at the stake: 4.5 inches You never know which one of these events will deliver the final accumulations of the spring down here in the valley, but this was the 54th storm and brought the season’s snowfall total to exactly 144.0”. I'm seeing 40F from 3,600ft+ on our sensors, but dropping to 30F at 2,600ft and leveling off at 31F at 1,500ft. The east side is remaining cold, foggy, and riming up. powderfreak Posted April 10, 2015 Share Posted April 10, 2015 Man this is one stout stratus layer. Over half the mountain is in it, and you cannot see anything up in that cloud. Crazy how dense it is. Quite the cold wedge sitting at like 925mb...and I'm sure its what's causing this thick stratus. The difference between even like 3,300ft and 3,600ft is probably 5-8F. You break the inversion and your goggles instantly fog up because it gets so warm so fast. Its pretty crazy. Each lift ride, at the same like 3,400ft elevation, all the sudden its warm and your goggles fog immediately. Sort of like standing in a freezer with glasses on, then walking back into the warm air. Instant condensation. 3,600ft...40F 2,600ft...31.5F 2,400ft...31.5F 1,500ft...40F Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
