Modfan Posted February 21, 2015 Share Posted February 21, 2015 Guys, as much as the weight is a concern; I think the ice jams are what you have to worry about; I could roof rake the first 3ft of my roof front and back(19 60's cape) and the front of my house (which got sun) would melt down to the shingles regardless how cold; the back which got no sun would develop the ice jams. Ice buildup along the eves probably helped the sections drop to the ground after it collapsed. I have a feeling the birds mouth cuts at the ends of the rafters weren't toe-nailed properly. The amount of snow build-up on that roof occurs virtually every year, even in relatively snowless years. I'm guessing that house was built after 2008.
