Maplewood, Essex Cty, NJ

Snow turned to sleet from 2:15 until 3:30, then back to snow.  Total accumulation was 1.5"/melted core 0.23"

Ratio of just over 6:1.  Guess we lost some volume to the sleet.  NWS reports for Essex Cty range from 1.5 - 1.8", except for Livingston reporting 5" (did someone forget to clear their board?). Hope you all stay safe out east.

Dangerous freeze up on area roadways is prompting closures for sanding. I just took a  short walk

here in Western Nassau and the sidewalks and streets are a sheet of ice.

Suffolk County police have closed the Long Island Expressway in both directions from exit 68 to 71 due to icy conditions and have urged drivers to use "extreme caution," a police spokesman said.

That section of the LIE in Suffolk will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, police said.

Earlier, Suffolk police had incorrectly said the entire LIE in Suffolk was closed, police said.

Police said in a news release that the state is sanding the road. "All roads in the county are in bad condition," the release said.

"Please use extreme caution if driving tonight," police said.

Sunrise Highway is currently still open, but because of slippery driving conditions, might be closed soon, police said.

A Nassau County police spokeswoman said the LIE is still open in Nassau County.
