packbacker
4km NAM went from no precip the previous runs for central NC to 0.25" running down I-40 and north roughly 50 miles. This would be a nice little ice event for GSO/Durham/Brick.

Damn, the High-Res NAM has legitimately heavy returns coming through northern NC at hr 9. 35+ dz returns... Yeah, I saw that but it wasn't getting to the surface and wasn't sure why, when I looked at the precip output it was lower than I thought.

We have a rather dry air mass, I suppose (which is good regarding temps, for sure), although it's hard to see that not making it down to the surface. Anyways, the temperature at GSO actually ticked up a degree to 46F last hour. The dew point dropped to 16F, though. The temperatures between the immediate cities of the Triad and the surrounding areas should become rather uniform once the precip moves in. superjames1992
Given all the sleet reports with temperatures in the 40s, the warmer air mass at the surface must be pretty thin...

WhiteoutWX
Idk guys... I think this has bust written all over it. Wet bulbs are still above freezing over most of NC outside the far northern portions and mountains. Precip is racing in faster than most models had it which may beat out high pressure trying to nose in from the north that is needed to drive the wedge. I think the further east you are the better off you will be. East winds at Hickory/Greensboro/Winston aren't gonna cut it.

WilkesboroDude
Greenville did mention thunder. Could be some thunder sleet and thunder freezing rain before the wedge becomes more pronounced. Probably a better chance for places like Asheville and central mountains.

CarolinaDog
I've seen some weird stuff happen in these here hills and this one of them. Just took the dogs out for a walk and we're getting a good pelting of sleet here in S Asheville. Like you, we've been hovering in the upper 40's and I'm thinking no way this happens. We're right at 40 in the back yard. Got both of you beat temp wise 46.0°. Just saw lightning & very heavy sleet currently!!! Unreal

gritsnc
Yeah, I just saw that. WTF??????? Are they just burning up unused school snow makeup days or what? If so, they better hope nothing happens in March... Orange County Schools are on a three-hour delay, as well. I was sitting with the principal at my daughters game tonight and we were all dumbfounded. We don't get "snow days". Any days missed have to be made up.
