HEAT WAVE 2012!

Wow

Recommended Posts

The KAVL airport hit 97 yesterday, just 1 off the record and 3 off the all-time record. My forecast several days ago was for 97 and I revised it yesterday to hit 98. All in all, I'm pleased with that!

Today, we have stubborn clouds again. But, I think the record of 95 will fall today. Probably won't break the all-time record though.

If it is gonna be this hot.....I say lets go for triple digits!

GSO at 85 at 10am versus 91 yesterday. We hit a daily record of 102 yesterday with a forecast of 104 for today. Based on 10am temps, today could bust badly on the low side. Not a met, so I have no idea why we'd be so much "cooler" today.

Much drier air appears to have advected into North Carolina with the MCS outflow last night. This allowed morning lows to bust on the low side. Same happened here, 100 miles east of GSO.

I don't think what happened last night was a conventional "heat burst." Heat busts (as far as I know) tend to be reasonably localized events. What happened last night -- rising temps and crashing dewpoints behind an outflow boundary -- was observed over thousands of square miles.

There are some high clouds this morning here in Marietta. Could easily prevent atl from hitting 105 + today

I was worried about that too, but so far temps are running right on track, actually a degree or two above forecasted hourly temps. So I don't think the partly cloudy skies will be much of a problem right now.

EDIT: It went up to 95 degrees at Hartsfield Int'l, that's about 3 degrees higher than it was this time yesterday. I'll have to double check to make sure going off of memory.

It was 92 yesterday at the same time.

Cool---prolly the first heat burst" ( ok mini heat burst) I have seen documented in this area....so that got me thinking so I looked and look what I found in Rocky Mount

23:53 NW 24 G 38 9.00 A Few Clouds and Breezy FEW095 86 74 67% 29.85 1010.5

22:53 Calm 8.00 Fair CLR 81 76 85% 29.77 1007.9

Here at KBUY, we had some localized and minor damage from the winds last night including one of the bradford pear trees in our front yard.

I got that observation from weather.com who updates from the airport on 15 min intervals rather than hourly. They updated it again and now it dropped back to 93.

EDIT: I just looked outside my bedroom window and noticed most if not all of the clouds have burned off here also.

Thanks for the tip I didn't know they reported like that.

I just moved my thermometer to a shaded open location for the day. I don't have to worry about rain destroying it so I'm going to try and get the most accurate reading I can today for the high imby. I don't have a Stevenson screen so I must improvise.

sitting at 93.2 and climbing steadily.

Don't think RDU will be breaking the all time 105 today. Tied it yesterday, but doesn't look like we'll get there today. Yesterday, we were 99F at 12:00. We're 3 off the pace today at 96. The outflow from the MCS last night put us behind the curve.

SPC has much of central/eastern NC in a slight risk for the potential for another MCS event this evening...that was as of earlier. We'll see what the new outlook holds shortly.

Kudos on the forecast...I was probably your biggest critic on that prediction, have never seen Asheville Regional go as high as it did yesterday.

As far as today goes, clouds burned off much faster, I'm currently sitting at 95.

Two of my remotes read in the upper 99 range yesterday, but one got to 101, though that sensor catches a bit of sun late in the day. Today that hot sensor is reading 96.4 at 1pm, but it's the reading at about 5 that will tell the tale. I love breaking records in winter...cold records. But summer heat records...not so much. T

It's pretty obvious that temps won't be as insane in the Carolina Piedmont as compared to yesterday...thanks to those higher dewpoints. I think yesterday was the day for breaking records, today may be just more of an above average summer day. Makes you wonder if some of the weather service offices will begin to trim numbers for tomorrow...

100F at 1pm here in Wilmington, N.C. -- and this is a coastal city! (Record high for this date is 100F set in 1959.)

ILM airport jumped from 96 to 100 the last hour; while the dew point crashed from 77 to 71. Blue skies horizon to horizon and winds have been VRBL 3 for the past three hours.

Sea breeze (all of 3mph) has made it to MBY (UNCW wx station) where it's now 96/81 HX 120.
