I have seen winter grades scattered in various threads but thought we should do an official thread 13/14 Winter Grade Thread now that it is April 15. 

 

Please just post your honest grades and try to give solid reasoning for your grade. 

 

Yes there are going to be grades your disagree with please keep it nice.  MODS please feel free to delete BS!!!

My Grade is A++

 

2 Major snowstorms (one of them EPIC for this area).

1 Major Ice storm

Several Warning criteria storms

Snow cover like never before

White & Crystal Christmas & White New Years (White Thanksgiving too (I was in Bloomingdale, MI))

Thundersnow (it was better just to the south but I still had it)

Incredible number of cold and snow records broken and some records just obliterated.

Snow total IMBY was >110"

Largest Storm was 18"

The major Ice storm was 1/2"-3/4"

 

Only negatives to me:

2 thaws one in January & one in February  (At least they didn't wipe out the snow cover & it was quickly refreshed/replaced both times).

COLD was a bit overbearing at times.

I told Tim that I would upgrade from A to A+ if we got an inch of snow so I'm officially upgrading to A+ before I change my mind.  :guitar:  I can find some things to nitpick but overall this is about as solid of a winter as it gets from start to finish.  Today's snow is one of the latest measurable snows I can recall and the latest inch I can recall so it's another milestone.

For here...

 

Snow Depth 20"+: two different times..peak depth 21"...drifts of 2-3 feet imby from Jan to Mar. The amount of days with 12, 15, and 18"+ depth was just ridiculous. Not even close to having ever been seen here before in recorded history

 

Sustained Depth: 110 straight days with T+ snowcover (Dec 9 - Mar 28). Total snowcover days of 1"+ imby 95...total days of T+ depth 118.

 

White Christmas: Ironically the only "bare" period from early Dec to late Mar was centered on Christmas. However, with patches of ice snow and a fresh dusting, it was still a mood setter though not official.

 

Ice Storm: no

 

Well below Zero Temps: -14F with -50F wind chills on Jan 6-7th, many below zero days (unusual for me on the water)

 

Blowing Snow/Blizzard Conditions: Never saw the magnitude of blowing and drifting I saw this winter

 

6"+ event: SIX of them

 

12"+ event: not technically, though 13.2" fell Dec 31-Jan 2 (1.6"+11.6")

 

15"+ event: no

 

18"+ event: no

 

TSSN: two times (Feb 17 & Feb 20)

 

Intense snowfall rates: 4" per hr Jan 27th

 

Major Thaws: none...a few minor ones however put brief big dents in our epic snowpack

 

LES event: numerous minor events of 1-3"

 

Normal Snowfall estimated: 42"....so we saw approx 2.25 WINTERS WORTH OF SNOW!!!

Despite being a bit disappointed, I still have to grade this winter an A- due to how historic it was.

 

Extreme Cold:

 

Somehow MKE didn't set an daily temperature records but did crack the top 10 coldest winter of all time

 

28 days at or below zero, 7th most all time.

 

Record ice coverage on Lake Michigan.

 

Snow/Snow cover:

 

This is where I had to lower the grade, zero notable storms the entire winter, although above average snowfall (63.4").

 

However, MKE had 92 consecutive days with 1" or more of snow on the ground, 2nd most all time.

 

Also tied the record for most days with 0.1" or more of snow during the season at 52 days.

The cold was very impressive which helped with the consecutive days with 1" inch+ snow OTG record which got broke. Streak was December 8th till March 26th.. Snow depth record for March broken with 22" on the ground on March 2nd.. Had 18+ on the ground in Jan, Feb and the first two weeks of March which i don't believe has ever been done here.. 12+ on the ground from Jan 5th till March 13th..

Officially speaking, Seasonal snowfall record almost broke again which is amazing when you consider it was broken in 08-09.. Personal record of 110.5".. Lastly.. 7 month's in a row that have seen flakes flying at one point or another during the month.

 

To sum up in terms of cold, snow storms, snow cover, longevity,  it does not get much better then this. Then when you consider how it was not localized sorta like 08-09 was it was a winter for the ages. For here this winter has set the bar.

The bar has been beyond set for here :lol:. To get the amount of cold and snow, not to mention the number of big snowstorms, we saw in the same winter is literally almost unheard of, as it has never happened at this magnitude before (while the winter of 1880-81 was cold, this one was colder). But FOR ME...it was the snowpack. Everyone knows that snowcover is my thing...and I have said all along that I would sometimes prefer a dry, cold snowcovered winter over one with more snow but continued thaws/bare ground periods all winter long. Never in my dreams did I think we would see a winter like this. Not only was the snow deep, the drifts deeper, and the snowbanks ridiculous, but the snow was usually fresh looking as it kept snowing, and drifting on days when it didnt snow. The fact that Detroit saw 30 MORE days with 6"+ snowcover then the PREVIOUS RECORD HOLDER....34 more days of 10"+ snowcover then the previous record holder...and 14 days more 15"+ snowcover than the previous record...speaks volumes.

95/100 - solid A

 

I enjoy all 4 seasons and even though this winter became severly tiring, it more than delivered on the weather front...tons of snow (felt like flakes were flying every other days for periods), deep cold, a couple 1'+ events, thundersnow, LES, etc.

 

I knocked off 5 points for lack of a true (non-drawn out) monster and somewhat overbearing cold.

Yeah a solid A for me as well.

Most snow on record at my place but lack of a big dog IMBY and no TSSN kept it from an A+

Too many 4-8" events to count. That two week stretch in January was something else.

Add that one night of legit blizzard conditions which was the best since GHD.

Also the amount of heavy snow bands or great overall banding with events became the norm (even if short duration) which was amazing. Had a 3"/hr rate occur twice.

And the most LES out this way with one event since 2005.

A+ for my area in the southern Thumb area of MI. B+ for the area where our cabin is at in northern lower MI (not in a main snow belt up there). I'm heading to the eastern UP tomorrow afternoon till Sunday for our last snowmobiling trip of the season. It's been a great season for snowmobilers in MI.........

 

WOW... Diehard. Trails are probably trashed.

 

Western is going to get hit pretty good though.

I'm heading to the eastern UP tomorrow afternoon till Sunday for our last snowmobiling trip of the season. It's been a great season for snowmobilers in MI.........

Despite all of nw lower receiving 150-200+", most businesses were disappointed in snowmobile traffic. They're blaming the cold ( personally, I think a lot of people were able to sled in southern MI so why travel?) I didn't mind not having down staters come up, the trails were nice and not much drunk and obnoxious traffic. Of course I rarely ride on weekends. Mon-Wed the trails are deserted.

As far as a grade. I'll stick with my C+. Lack of any decent systems, lake freezing up, and severe cold made the Winter less than desirable. 110" of snow in Dec/Jan was pretty epic tho.

Edit: to add to records broken.... Petoskey set a new record with 184.4", breaking the 1970/1971 record of 183.9". Also noting, the other site in petoskey at the water treatment plant recorded 216.8"!! Woohoo

Some of the busines owners up in the UP are saying the same thing about the lack of sledders this season. I feel it's because there was good snow to ride on pretty much everywhere in MI this year so people were able to ride other areas other then the snow belt areas. Heck, there was people ridding all over down state this year, no need for them to head north. I look forward to the days when I'm retired and able to ride my sled during the week up there and have the lake to myself in the summer. Some day.....

Our group is not a big fan of trail ridding and putting tons of miles on, mostly off trail, getting stuck, boondocking type of rides. It's about the smiles, not miles and there should be plenty of snow left in the woods to play in. Looks like the western UP is going to get hit pretty good your right. No way I could live up there.
