wxdude64
A good start to the new month with a new record 'cool max' of 22.7 degrees, beating 2019's 25.3 degrees. Low was 9.5 degrees right at the 7 am CoCoRaHS report. Wind was WNW at 9 gutsing to 20 mph, WC of -3 to -9 degrees. After we cleared out around midnight last night that nearly full moon made it look like 4-5 pm in afternoon it was so bright shining off the glacier. Had some flurries yesterday evening, but no new accumulation, that all went @Bob Chill and @Buddy1987's way and further south.

Windy and cold here in the frozen lowlands.

I looked out at one point during the night and the moon looked almost ice-frosted, blurry, cirrus I assume, but still SO bright. It was almost creepy but pretty. 1

And you nailed the answer, you kind of just get used to it and dress appropriately.
Harv_poor
As someone who will golf in the winter, you learn sun w/o wind is bearable. Yesterday morning, my grandson went sledding with one of his friends and I stood outside talking to the dad for about an hour. The lack of clouds and wind (and many layers including my new Penn State hoodie) definitely made it bearable.
WEATHER53
Low of 11 with minimum hourly wind chill of -4 Any south to southwest breeze influenced warm up is going to travel hundreds of miles over snowpack before reaching our snowpack . It will be interesting to see how that influences milder air attempts starting with tomorrows predicted high temps of 30-33 and 32-35 Tuesday for DC

It’s not a frigid one or two day blast which often sets our records but rather a protracted highs 18-25 and lows 0 to 10.

Just went down to the water, it's roughly low tide and very low on pilings but since it's ice covered not dramatic looking as blowout tides go. OTOH, stuff is happening and LWX verifying. I'm not sure when this occurred but the people's pier that is usually in my pics took a hit. Pier looks ok but dock at the end is kind of crumpled sideways. MillvilleWx
This is easily one of the craziest cold stretches in my lifetime. Insane enough, one of my coldest was the 2021 Arctic Outbreak when I lived in TX. Midland was below freezing for 8 days in a row with 3 days highs in the teens and one morning below zero. I seem to bring winter with me wherever I go….I’ll take it!! I love winter

LordBaltimore
Terrapin beach this afternoon. ThePhotoGuy
28 for the high after a low of 14.9 I have been using the Windy.com website for weather forecast plots for the past couple months. During the cold stretch, I have been comparing the GFS, ECMWF, and the ICON for highs & lows during the cold stretch. ECMWF and the GFS has usually been 3-5 degrees too cold for the highs and lows while the ICON has been more accurate and usually only 1-2 degrees off.

DCA currently sits at 37.7F for the winter, 21st coldest winter since 1970 (arbitrary cutoff), and 0.7F below the 1981-2010 average. That figure is most certainly going to drop, but I'm not sure it can be overstated in how potentially prolific the upcoming cold snap will be. 12z GFS' raw output for temps at DCA has the 24th-31st averaging 17.6F, which would be the coldest on record for that time period. For a laugh we can take the Euro's output from 2 days ago (the most recently accessible chart on the weathermodels site) to find that it has DCA averaging 12.2F for that timeframe. The Euro has an obvious cold bias with snow cover and IIRC has backed off a bit from that ridiculous number, but all of this illustrates how potent the upcoming cold will be. The "tamer" solution still challenges the coldest last week of January on record. Crazy what a week of prolonged cold can do to some averages. Through yesterday, DCA sits at 35.3F for the winter, good enough for 13th coldest first 2/3rds of winter since 1970 and 2.7F below the 1981-2010 average, the coldest such period since 2010-2011 (34.1F)
