Detroit usually gets more snow than Chicago despite a few epic Chicago storms, and most here know that. 1

No one would argue against that. But of course, Chicago does better with big dogs. In terms of seasonal snowfall and snowcover, Detroit may do slightly better, but it's not a big enough difference worth quibbling over.

Well when winters suck and are boring like they have been for years, there's nothing else to do on here than quibble back n forth with josh for fun. Over the past 20 years, Detroit has averaged 6.8" more annual snowfall and 5 more annual 1"+ snowcover days despite a DJF avg temp 1.3° warmer than Chicago. Obviously it isn't a huge difference, and it shouldn't be with the two places latitude and proximity. But the same thing goes for big dogs. It isnt like Chicago gets one every winter. Other than those few, the overall snowstorm climo is also quite similar.

hawkeye_wx
We just got a burst of heavy snow that dropped 0.5", but the temp is 33º so it's a wet snow. However, a new squall just hit with very strong wind and near white-out conditions. It should be brief, though.

While the difference in annual snowfall is only about 7" more at DTW than ORD, the days with mood flakes and overcast skies is a big difference. My brother brings that up constantly. He lived in Chicago for a decade and this is his 2nd winter back in MI. This year has been a different animal. The roads are slick nearly daily, from the constant dustings in Dec to the surplus of blowing and drifting snow in Jan. Salt contractors are making a fortune.

roardog
Dry is bad this time of year whether it’s warm or cold. Warm and dry here usually consists of temperatures around 35-40 and 30MPH winds. Might as well be cold enough to look like winter when the warm option is still cold. lol
