Have my first atmosphere and weather test today! Got to do some studying beforehand this morning, which might bring back some memories for meteorologists here.

Decent win for the Terps yesterday. After beating up on the usual weaklings the first couple games, they have had 2 respectable wins to go 4-0.

As usual, it will  probably be a struggle to finish above 500 once they start playing legit teams in the conference.

Apparently canceling my lawn service and not watering my lawn this summer has invited Yellowjackets to build a nest IN my lawn. I unfortunately discovered this when attempting to mow the sparsely grown tan lawn covered in leaves this evening. Apparently I unknowingly mowed right over this Yellowjacket construction site. I first got stung on my elbow. Thought it was a mosquito. Then I got stung THROUGH my t-shirt. Then on my hand. Then again through my shirt.

Of course I start doing a weird rendition of a rain dance of some sort. My neighbors clearly think I've lost it. I try to play it cool, all the while being attacked by these invaders. I go inside for safety. One stings me on my hand again, IN the house. I take off my t-shirt. Thinking I'm safe, I go upstairs. A Yellowjacket. I go in my room. A Yellowjacket. :fulltilt: They hitched a ride on my clothes? I killed a total of 6 in my house. Thankfully it was easy because they fly to the windows and just crawl around. Easy targets. I think they got them all.

Google says to douse them with a mixture of water and dish soap to drowned out the nest. I will also start up the water sprinkler, which needs batteries because I didn't use it all summer. I will let that run until the grass is nice and soaked, which will also drown out the nest. Meanwhile, my lawn is half mowed. lol  It will remain that way until I'm sure it's clear.

I have a nice credit on my water bill because I didn't water my lawn. I have a few extra gallons to spare.

Anyone got recommendations of things to do for someone that is new to the area.

Thanks!

Welcome! Where exactly are you? What’s the new job?

Welcome! So where you are in the forum will make a difference in what people will suggest. There is so much TO do. The Ap trail isn't that far off, plenty of other trails, from steep mountains to the canal (which includes biking). Course tons of museums and the Atlantic and bay are close by. It really depends on what you like to do. I am WAY off in the western zone of forum, but plenty out this way too. Trains (both museums and rides), trails, lakes, caves and more. Again welcome!

Welcome! I live near there (but we’re in Alexandria). What are your hobbies and then can help point you in the right direction. You can’t go wrong with exploring Old Town. Del Ray in Alexandria has a great strip of coffee shops, restaurants, etc.

Bees are crazy this year! Both my daughter and I got stung though our clothing (she had a sweatshirt on!) earlier this month on a cool morning. I haven't had a bee sting in 35 years. Got me right in the gut too, super itchy for a couple days.

I've also heard gasoline and a match will take care of them haha.

Welcome to the sub fellow Met! Great position you have and a really important one at that. I was the Upper-Air focal at NWS Midland for 3 years before I moved back east to work at WPC. I loved the UA  program considering its importance, and how often can you say you launched/worked with weather balloons as part of your job characteristics? This will be a great experience!

As for the area, there’s so much to do around here, it’s hard to fit into one post. We are one of the best regions (VA/MD) for maintaining natural beauty with several counties enacting laws that dictate percentages of trees and greenery that need to be in place to maintain its image. We have several smaller parks, state parks, wildlife preserves, and Shenandoah National, plus Luray Caverns to partake for hiking/walking/biking pleasures. This area is also home to one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world, so we have lots of great shops and festivals that celebrate it all throughout the year. And with ethnic diversity comes some insanely good food from everywhere. Seriously, whatever you are in the mood to try, I guarentee we have it. The local fare is fantastic and revolves around seafood, mainly crab forward dishes that will blow your mind how good they are. We could have a thread just dedicated to food in this place (paging @stormtracker :))

How many areas do you know where you can visit the beach, a Bay, rivers, major cities, vibrant suburban life, pristine rural beauty, and multiple sets of mountains, and see it all in one weekend? It’s actually possible here.

We are home to several major attractions through both states steeped in history. If you want to try different activities, there’s clubs galore and people of similar interests in whatever you could imagine. I could go on and on. If you ever have questions on specifics, I’m sure we can provide locations and ideas to basically anything. Welcome to the Mid Atlantic!

PS: Sorry in advance for the traffic

Welcome!

Also, in non new met news - had a bald eagle cruise past me about head high over by the bridge .7 miles south of Monkton Station on the NCR trail while I was walking my labs this AM. He/she landed on a branch about 30 yards from the bridge hanging over the river. Absolutely awesome in all respects. Breath-taking being that close to one.
