5 years ago, March 2010 rainstorm

This was essentially a surprise hurricane for parts of Long Island and NJ. People weren't ready for how bad that got. I was amazed. sustained 50mph and gusting to hurricane force at JFK.

Listen to the wind when this guy opens his window at the 2 min mark.

Watch the ocean crash over the bulkhead and wash onto the belt parkway. This is just a mile or so from the verazzano.

Melting snow floods Shoreham homes

SHOREHAM - Three homes were condemned in a Shoreham neighborhood Thursday after melting ice from a nearby sod farm flooded the area.

Mike Harding, of Shoreham, lost his home of 10 years in a matter of seconds when a deluge of ice melt came rushing through his backyard fence and blew out his basement windows.

“Water just came in with a fury…All the windows got knocked out,” said Harding. “Just the magnitude of it and water just kept coming in for approximately three to four hours.”

Harding says four feet of ice melt flooded his basement, causing a wall to collapse.

The Town of Brookhaven condemned Harding's home and two others on Sherwood Drive.

Homeowners blame Delalio Sod Farm for their losses. They say the farm, located behind their houses, failed to maintain a proper drainage system.

News 12 called Delalio Sod Farm for comment, but no one was available.

Harding and his neighbors are facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and are currently displaced.

The three families are staying in hotels and with friends.
