Absolutely unreal cold. Much of it has been stated but a recap for SE Michigan

DTW hit -12, not only a record for the day but the coldest temp on record for Detroit this late in the season. So Detroit has set 3 record lows in 2 days!

FNT hit -25 which not only smashed their daily record but tied for their all time coldest temp on record in flint.

The usual cold spots and valleys and rural areas had tons of -25 to -30 reports! I witnessed something ive never seen before.

When left my house around 710 this morning my car said -9. When I got to the usual cold spot just south of dtw in a rural slightly lower area...it got to -22! Ive never seen my car read lower than -13. It went back up as I got on the freeway but still. This spot is less than a mile from DTW btw.

ARB hit -30.

Wow all around.

-13 at DTW actually. An intrahour -13 snuck in between two -11's I guess. They'll have to correct the record report.

Deja vu. Last winter i swear we had a ton of them.

Outlying areas further north in the lower peninsula are getting colder this time around because of the later timing (and more frozen lakes) vs. the big arctic push last year which was earlier in January and moderated more in areas more heavily influenced by the lakes, which would have been less frozen at the time. The longwave trough was further west in general last winter. The coldest nights last year at DTW were with SW winds advecting cold around the lakes, not great radiating nights like last night.

Detroits records go to 1874...

Our top 5 coldest febs...

1. Feb 1875, 12.2F...this is also the all-time coldest month

2. Feb 1934, 14.8F

3. Feb 1936, 16.0F

4. Feb 1904, 16.1F

5. Feb 1978, 16.3F

Feb 2015 mean temp thru 20th is 14.9F

Snowfall will end up over 25 inches this Feb, which is also unprecedented. None of the top 10 coldest Februaries exceeded 16", and many had below normal snow.

Also interesting is the snowcover....

1. Feb 1875 - snowcover all month, unsure of depth tho as snow depth records were not kept

2. Feb 1934 - brutal. cold, very little snowcover. The first 11 days had a T-1" depth, the following week had 0 depth, and the last 10 days had a 1-2" depth

3. Feb 1936 - snowcover thru the 24th, but not deep. Ranged from 1-6", most days between 2-5". Down to T last 5 days of month

4. Feb 1904 - unsure of snowcover status, likely snowcover most of month, but dont think it was deep, plus a few days in 40s...so unsure

5. Feb 1978 - snowcover all month ranged from 5-9". Started month a 9", slowly compacted to 5", finished month at 6"

Feb 2015 - double digit depth the entire month.

down to 4 already and a high of -7 tomorrow.  the weeks on end of cold has been a little hard to take but walking to the mailbox today, strangely I felt a hint of Spring.  Maybe it was the sun angle and a bird singing..

Hit 30 down this way. Definitely felt like spring. sick.

This month is going to end up colder than January 2014.  I remember last January being EXTREMELY cold.  I guess I'm a seasoned veteran at this point.  What's another -25 wind chill?  Doesn't even seem that unusual anymore :sizzle:

We had two pretty severe blasts last January 2-3 weeks apart. I was impressed by that. We've had two more severe blasts this month within a week with two more pretty severe shots coming this week. Seems unreal

Tonight may end up as the coldest night this winter. Similar setup to when MSP hit -11 on Jan 5th with 925mb temps at -22 to -24C and 850mb ~ -25C. Surface high is positioned a bit better this time but lack of snow cover doesn't help. I say we bottom out at -10.

From DTX via FB

Using our forecast temperatures for the rest of the month, we are nearly a lock for Detroit's 3rd coldest February in 140 years...potentially the 2nd coldest. The two years we are competing against are 1875 (#1) and 1934 (#2). It's a similar situation in Flint and Saginaw. In fact, all three locations are experiencing one of their coldest months EVER!
