And Fall is once again in the air!

Been the case alot of this month.. Was looking at Battle Creek 5nw daily stuff for the month and it has fallen into the 40s 10 times ( lowest 43 on 3 occasions ) while it has only dropped into the 60s just 5 times and warmest being 66. Pretty remarkable. The warmest high at either KBTL or 5nw is 87 which was hit again today for the 3rd time this year at KBTL.

Question for those more familiar with LES. Is it necessarily a foregone conclusion that this coming LES season is headed for the crapper?

I wouldn't completely write it off but without a very warm August-October, the season will be shorter this year. The maps shown are surface tempatures but the sub surface temps are much colder and haven't warmed a considerable amount especially Superior. A good fall system would overturn the lakes and even squash the LES season even more. In other words don't look for a good LES season this year.

Absolutely phenomenal out there today.  Fresh northwest breeze, low humidity, puffy clouds whizzing by, and temps in the upper 70s.  Just about everyone is outside doing something today.

It felt pretty nice walking around, but it was too windy to be called 'phenomenal'.  It was really howling at times.  I had to move one of my big potted plants into the garage for the day to prevent it from being shredded.

Mid 60s with sunny conditions at this time of summer is noteworthy! ...especially with the combined dewpoints in the upper 40s! - Something I would expect more in June!

Yeah - no kidding Wisconsinwx. You could have days like this in October and even November! Extremely nice weather today!  :)

Assuming we do not see 80F again til August...this July saw just 13 day with a high temp at or above 80F. This ties for the 4th lowest on record!

Since 1874, or 141 years, only 9 Julys have had 13 or less days with a high of 80F+. And 3 of those 9 are since 2000.

1884 - 13 days

1891 - 9 days

1895 - 13 days

1920 - 12 days

1924 - 13 days

1992 - 13 days

2000 - 10 days

2009 - 13 days

2014 - 13 days

So if you want to rank in the order of least amount of 80F days....

1.) 1891 - 9 days

2.) 2000 - 10 days

3.) 1920 - 12 days

4.) 1884, 1895, 1924, 1992, 2009, 2014 - 13 days

58.8° water temp recorded today in southern LM (mid lake buoy) Second coldest temp ever recorded this late in summer.

Yep...from LOT:

INTERESTINGLY...THE LARGE WAVES ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTED TO NEAR RECORD COLD WATER TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING. LARGE WAVES CAUSE UPWELLING...WHICH

BRINGS COLDER SUB-SURFACE WATER UPWARD TOWARD THE SURFACE RESULTING

IN A DROP IN SURFACE WATER TEMPERATURES. THE WATER TEMPERATURE AT THE SOUTHERN LAKE MICHIGAN MID LAKE BUOY

DROPPED TO 14.9C (58.8F) FOR SEVERAL HOURS THIS MORNING. ONLY

ONCE BEFORE HAVE WATER TEMPERATURES COLDER THAN THAT BEEN

OBSERVED AT THE MID LAKE BUOY THIS LATE IN THE SUMMER (JULY 28TH

THROUGH AUGUST 31ST)...WHICH WAS BACK ON AUGUST 29TH/30TH OF 2009

WHEN THE WATER TEMPERATURE DIPPED AS LOW AS 14.1C (57.4F).

TYPICALLY WATER TEMPERATURES AT THE SOUTHERN MID LAKE BUOY IN LATE

JULY AND AUGUST ARE IN THE UPPER 60S TO MID 70S. A LOOK BACK AT

HOURLY OBSERVATIONS FROM THE SOUTHERN MID LAKE BUOY GOING BACK TO

1981...PRIOR TO TODAY THERE HAD ONLY BEEN 19 HOURLY OBSERVATIONS

WITH WATER TEMPERATURES BELOW 15.0C (59.0F) THIS LATE INTO THE

SUMMER SEASON. OUT OF OVER 25,000 OBSERVATIONS THAT EQUATES TO

A FREQUENCY OF LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF ONE PERCENT!

We're gonna just barely miss out on having a high in the 60s.

Disappointing. 70º the high at LAF today.

SBN set a record low max today with a high of 64º (also tied for the 4th lowest max temp ever recorded in July), besting the old record of 67º set last year.

Another fantastic day here, and with less wind compared to yesterday.  Made it to 75 with dews as low as the upper 40s at times.

Normally I want at least one or two major heat waves during a summer to sort of get my summer fix, but after the last two hot summers I don't care as much about not having major heat.
