What're all the 12"+ storms you've experienced locally? So, nothing from when the two years you were living in Portland, Maine, etc.

In chronological order-- all from Potomac, Maryland:

2/11/83: 22"

*I missed the two 12" snows in January and February 1987*

3/13/93: 13.5"

1/6-8/96: 24"

2/15-17/03: 21"

2/11-12/06: 14"

12/18-18/09: 21"

2/5-6/10: 26.5"

2/9-10/10: 13.5"

Close calls: There were none-- 12/82 and 1/00 were ~10".

For the town of Potomac, MD, if you throw in the two from 1987, that averages to one 12"+ storm once every 3 or 4 years since I've been alive.

79, 83, 87 x 2, 93, 96, 03,  06,

09, 10 x 2, 11

I can only remember the years lol. I've put down totals IMBY based solely on  memory.  I was living in Damascus in the 70's and 80's, Frederick for the 90's, and back to Damascus for the rest.

76 or 77 had one close to a foot

79 - around 30"

83 - over 2'

87 storms were around 1' with the second being the biggest if I remember correctly...

93 was around 19" in Fred. Tons of sleet mixed in...amazing storm

96 a crap load of snow... more in Damascus than Frederick city.

03 - 24"

06 - 14"

09 - 19"

10 # 1 -approximately 30"

10 # 2 - approximately 20"

11 - 14"

All 09-10 (here since Feb 2006) .. I moved midway thru the winter so the first is Glover Park, the other two Cleveland Park.

12/18-19, 20"
2/5-6, 24"
2/9-10, 12.5"

I think Feb 2006 was close? Whatever Matt measured I got. I was only here a few days and didn't realize just how hard it was for it to snow in these parts.

You had one more bonus one--- 12/5-6/03 was almost for sure a 12"+ event for you.

Born and raised in AA county, so anything from 1984-2002. Then was in Salisbury until 2007. Then back to AA county until 2011, now in Balt County.

I guess I only missed 2003s big storm. Scored big in 2000 with the Jan storm. I do remember the couple big storms in the 90s. Don't have much memory of anything before that.

Obviously 09/10.

Lived in Northwest Baltimore until 1978 and don't remember anything before then anyway but I guess 2/6/78 would have been close. Moved to Pikesville/Owings Mills after the 1978 winter.

2/79 - 20+

2/83 - 24+

1/87 and 2/87 - slightly over a foot with each storm.

3/93 - 18

Moved to Reisterstown after the 93 winter.

1/96 - 26

1/2000 - 12

2/2003 - 26

12/2003 - 12 counting both parts

2/2006 - 15

Moved to Manchester after 2009 winter.

12/2009 - 20

2/5-6/2010 - 24

2/9-10/2010 - 32

1/2011 - 14 counting the 3 inches in the morning.

Counting 2/78 that would be 15 events roughly over a 35 year period. Not bad at all.

Pretty sure BWI didn't record 12 or more inches with any event from the time I was born in 1973 until the PD1 in 1979 although many sections of the city and county did receive 12 inches on 2/6/78. I think dec. 1973 would have been a close call.

I lived in Centreville from 89-02...so 93 (not sure if we quite made a foot but I remember the wind and a crusting of ice on top of the snow, 96 for sure (remember measuring 25" in the front yard), and 00 (another close one but I think we made it). Out of the state for college and grad school until Nov 2010, so I missed the epic 09-10 winter although I came back for the holidays just after the Dec storm and was here for an interview a week or two after the feb storms and there was still well over a foot on the ground from those.

I know that storms outside the area don't count but when I was in grad school (CO front range area) I missed the 3 or 4 biggest storms there (all 18-24+ inches) so I have terrible snow luck. I'm going to be out of town next weekend so it is a lock that we get our first area wide warning event this winter.

I think S & E of BWI actually did better than BWI

I know Southern MD got 16"+ because my uncle came down that night and had to drive to St. Mary's County the next morning and said he thought they were around 18" where he was....actually, it wasn't as much that far south, but on the way down to St. Mary's County

I didn't believe it would ever snow again after the horrendous winter of 72/73

Lol - I was in 2nd grade then, but you reminded me of how bad a winter it was. I remember wishing for spring; I think because it was an endless brown and miserable winter.

1/96: 19" College Park, MD

That must have been it. I remember Easton had rain for most of the event and turned to snow at the end. I had 12 inches here and down in southern Caroline county there was like 3. It was 50 degrees during the day and dewpoints were low, temps dropped right to 32 and it snowed its ass off that night. Was an interesting storm. I remember friends in Westminster getting over 18.

Does this mean that none  of the four  12 inch plus storms in less then 12 months (3/60, 12/60,1/61 and 2/61) in central NJ where I grew up were at least 12 inches in DC? I just find that surprising!

Are you sure about the Feb 9/10 storm?  That was an extremely difficult one to measure, and according to the PNS report from late on the 10th, nobody in Fairfax Co. recorded over a foot of snow.  I only had around 9.5" and the gradient basically went from NE to SW.
