Presidents' Day Storm of 1979 -- Most Memorable Snowstorm Ever
TJ3 replied to RodneyS's topic in Mid Atlantic
I only post on this board when it is about that storm. Yes it was life changing for me. Before then I loved snow because I was a teenager hoping to get out of school. After that day it was because I was fascinated by what the hell just happened. I thought I was the only one obsessed for years after that storm. Thank God I found this place. With regards to the storm, waking at dawn and looking out my window that Monday morning is still one of the most shocking weather things I ever witnessed. I have not seen those rates in the DMV since. Honestly not even close . February ‘83 was incredible. But no. ‘96 it snowed forever but not close. Biggest drifts I have seen to this day. I have pictures somewhere from ‘66 my dad took. They were actually higher. But I was only 2 1/2 so no actual memory of it. PD1 will stay with me forever. -
The Weekend Rule? Saturday 2/17 - The Icon Storm
TJ3 replied to DDweatherman's topic in Mid Atlantic
Even similar to many 70s events in the DMV until things got going in 78 and 79. -
Jim Cantore not impressed at all with any staying power of mid February flip back to winter in the East. If at all.

These last two storms remind me so much of what we used to get here when I was a kid growing up in the ‘70s. These kind of storms were our go to. It seemed like every heavy snow warning was 4-6. I think my earliest memory of a 6-8 warning was in ‘78. I was so surprised since I didn’t know that was even a thing lol. Then Feb ‘79 came and that changed everything.

Jan/Early Feb Medium/Long Range Discussion Part 3

I’d be fine with what 1996, 1999, and 2015 gave us -
Best rates of the evening right now in McLean
-
Well today they were all in Rehoboth Beach. I was out this morning before the rain and I saw no less than 10 large flocks in one hour. It was incredible. Seemed to be heading South but who knows.

Didn’t expect to see snow in McLean this morning

I don’t post much but seem to comment once a year about February ‘79 so will do so again. If for no other reason I was around to see it and many on here are younger. But it is the reason I participate in this odd hobby. On the hours at dawn and after, I had never seen it snow with such intensity and to this very day, I still have not. Not even close honestly. And have been here for every major event since then except January 1982. It is indelibly etched in my memory forever.

The first paragraph of the above might be the best thing ever written about snow on this board.

Good one. Snowed to beat the band that afternoon

Time to think cold. What is your favorite snow memory?
TJ3 replied to ldub23's topic in Mid Atlantic
Waking up a little after dawn Monday the morning of PD 1. If you were caught in one of those bands, you will know what I am talking about. Pure magic -
There are a lot of storms 93 can’t touch in the immediate DMV. Started out with some enthusiasm. Then disaster. At least the wrap around snow helped a little. And yes totally agree 2016 for some reason is unfairly ignored.
-
Definitely. Sun coming out now but that was fun. Didn’t expect this when I got here yesterday. It’s the little things that count in a winter like this one.

Nice little flizzard burst in Rehoboth two blocks from the ocean. I’ll take it.

January Mid/Long Range Disco 3: The great recovery or shut the blinds?
TJ3 replied to psuhoffman's topic in Mid Atlantic
Poor Bob knew what was happening at the 6:00 broadcast. He was not his usual certain self, I am sure on purpose. He could not come out and say what was happening without coordination with local NWS offices. But he practically begged the viewers to tune back in at 11:00. -

I just miss watching the NFL in January as exciting runs came in. -
Blowing snow in McLean. Will declare a small victory

The beach at Rehoboth has been absolutely getting pounded.

How could I forget. Four days before our wedding and it was going to be outside!! Luckily Saturday made it into the “balmy” 60s. Snowed almost all day on the 9th and frequently heavy at times. But just minor grass accumulations in Tysons McLean area. Dulles a different story

3/12 Event: Winters Last Hurrah at Least East of Mountains
TJ3 replied to Weather Will's topic in Mid Atlantic
Not a hot news flash here. Buy my God what an awful place DCA is to measure snow. I just made the snowy scenic drive down GW Parkway from McLean to DCA to pick up my daughter. Once started getting close to the airport looked almost like a November car topper had blown through. Nothing remotely like the modest but still snowy scene back up in McLean. Lived here all my life and I’m still shocked every time I experience it. -

Best Mid-Atlantic winter storm of the last 40 years
TJ3 replied to PrinceFrederickWx's topic in Mid Atlantic
Did you wake in time to see the incredible rates? That is what it forever etched in my mind as I awoke right at dawn on Monday. I lived in McLean and we got stuck under a band. Was, and still is, the most awesome snow experience I’ve ever had. No doubt why I have this snow affliction. I have seen every major storm in the DMV since by the way. It’s not a contest.
