My apologies to Coventry. I wonder where that was recorded. Coventry overall is pretty hilly town and you wouldn't think an all time state record would come from there. It must have been in a real low spot near that river

Our town varies in elevation from 934' down to around 200'. Perhaps this reading was from close to the Mansfield line as that is in a valley of sorts.

The station is located here:

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/datasets/GHCND/stations/GHCND:USC00061689/detail

If I recall from some previous attempts at looking at snowfall data, they do well temp wise but like Storrs, seem to have relatively low annual snowfalls compared to places just north of there.  Stafford Springs when it was located along the river valley also used to radiate well.  They were -26° that morning of a high in the upper teens.

That station is located in a hollow on the Skungamaug River.

I don't recall anyone, including the NCDC saying it doesn't count.  I just hadn't heard of that before.  Sorry of it seemed like I was saying otherwise.

No worries, I just think it should be listed in more places online along with the Falls Village reading, especially if it's a tie. Most places only have Falls Village.

Yup that's exactly where I figured it would be. No wonder.. LOL..I'm sure 99% of town wasn't that cold that morning..but someone who knew what they were doing put a thermo in that spot..and it goes down in the history books

Bigeow Hollow up by Union was probably very cold then as well, but I don't think there is a station there. The hollow is usually at least 5F colder than higher places around it when we go there to walk on the ice.

It appears the cold is coming in a bit faster than guidance along Rt 2 up through NE Mass... BED slipped back to 10F during the morning, and their previous machine guidance' had them teeny-bopping through this evening.

Impressed with ALB!   Wow, stuck at 3F.   DP of -4..   S-

9F here in Ayer.

Impressive gradient along this arctic boundary....

I need to get a temperature logger.  I've been meaning to get one and tomorrow night would be a great night to see what the temps do there.  It's a great sheltered location.  I know I see a 3-4° drop from my place to lower places so it must be similar there.

Probably better to post this in here... put it in the storm thread but may get buried quickly.

This one is for Jerry and Ginxy...

WE SAW A HIGH OF -4F AT BTV...WHICH OCCURRED AT MIDNIGHT. THE
DAYTIME HIGH WAS ONLY -8F...AND TEMPS HAVE FALLEN BACK TO -11F AT
3PM. THE HIGH OF -4F IS THE COLDEST MAX OBSERVED AT BTV SINCE
1/9/2004 (NEARLY 10 YEARS!).
SOME LOCATIONS IN NORTHERN NY DIDN`T
GET ABOVE -10F DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS.

OTHER POTENTIAL IMPACTS INCLUDE POSSIBLE FREEZING OF WATER PIPES
AND DEVELOPING FROST HEAVES ON ROADWAYS OWING TO SUB-ZERO TEMPS.
THIS THREAT WILL EXIST OVER THE NEXT 36-48 HOURS UNTIL TEMPS FINALLY
WARM ABOVE ZERO IN THE NORTHERN ZONES SATURDAY. WE/VE SEEN THESE
COLD SNAPS HISTORICALLY ACROSS VERMONT...BUT IT HAS BEEN QUITE A
NUMBER OF YEARS. THE NUMBER OF HOURS BELOW ZERO WILL LIKELY RANK IN
THE TOP 10 IN THE BURLINGTON WX RECORD.
..SO THIS IS DEFINITELY AN
ARCTIC AIR MASS OF NOTE. FOR THOSE VENTURING OUT...DRESS IN LAYERS
AND MINIMIZE EXPOSED SKIN.

I'm keeping my p/c for posterity.  This picture may not be clear.  My ZFP is for -18 - -24

-15 in my p+c with 5-10mph winds

I think I've been that cold with radiational, but not with wind.

I wouldn't expect that to be collocated. Probably 5-10mph winds early in the night, diminishing, and then the bottom falls out.

-15F with strong winds has happened at CON before though, but it's probably been awhile.

LOL--Chris has a -28 in his p/c.  He'll beat me yet again.  I thought my -25 gave me a chance.

This'll be one of the nights I set my alarm for 2:00a.m. just to load up the stoves again.   That would be one of the few drawbacks of living where such temps are more commonplace.

3.8/1 off a high of 4.4

Much easier to break a daily record. Our regional all-time temps are pretty tough to beat. Impressive that northern ME today came within 3 degrees.

Saw later yesterday that CAR pulled back on the Van Buren temp, I guess it could not be verified, It looked out of whack with the rest being the only station -5F colder the the other 2 coldest that were further west of there

Chris' p/c has -28.  Mine has -25.

I won't get it on the hill, but it's fun to look at nonetheless.

That's nasty cold and I hope it verifies.  But it doesn't line up with forecasted lows to the north into VT, which makes me suspect the P/C is a mistake.  BTV's graphical forecast map shows widespread lows in the mid negative teens, with even Saranac Lake at only -21F, and with other lows in the negative 20s found along the Canadian border.

They are ambitious.  The zfp is calling for -18 to -24 for western Franklin (me) and -21 to -27 for eastern Franklin (Chris).

I just cannot imagine it ever getting that cold here. Seems like we struggle mightily to get to -10 even under presumably ideal conditions. That must've been a heck of an airmass.

That PWM temp may be the most anomalous ever recorded for a New Emgland location.  I don't know what the averages were for PWM in 1943, but using today's norms, -39 would be 56F below the avg minimum.   It's 13F colder than their next lowest (I'm omitting the -31 on 2/15/43 as it was obviously an 11:59 PM reading as the temp dove for the record.)   I'm too lazy to do the research (it's not real important, anyway), but I'm guessing that -39 is the country's coldest sea level - well, 72 ft but less than 1,000' from salt water - until one gets north of the Aleutian Peninsula.

Question about the MA record:  When did they hit -40.  When I've checked, the record is listed at -35 at Chester in Jan 1981.  I'd hate to lose that one, if only because the same location also holds (in a tie) the state heat record with 107 on Hot Saturday in Aug 1975.
