1940 - A Category 2 hurricane struck the Georgia and South Carolina coast. Significant flooding, the worst since 1607, and landslides struck Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia during the system's slow trek as a weakening tropical storm, and then as an extratropical cyclone, through the Southeast. 1944 - The temperature at Burlington, VT, soared to an all-time record high of 101 degrees. Thunderstorms around Yellowstone Park WY produced four inches of rain in twenty minutes resulting in fifteen mudslides. Thunderstorms over Long Island NY drenched Suffolk County with 8 to 10 inches of rain. Twenty-three cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date. 1993: Ashley National Forest, Utah: A tornado strikes in the Uinta Mountains, 20 miles northeast of Roosevelt, Utah. It demolishes 1,000 acres of trees in the Ashley National Forest at 10,800 feet above sea level. (Ref. WxDoctor)

 

1999 - An F2 tornado touched down in the metropolitan area of Salt Lake City. The tornado lasted ten minutes and killed one person, injured more than 80 people, and caused more than $170 million in damages. Parts of the region could see a shower or thundershower this evening and tonight. Above normal temperatures will persist through tomorrow or Thursday. Highs will generally top out in the middle and upper 80s. 

Cooler air will move into the region to close of the week. As a result, Friday through Sunday could see highs mainly in the upper 70s and lower 80s.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +4.1°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +2.6°C for the week centered around August 6. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +3.72°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +2.15°C. The ongoing strong El Niño, which has reached super El Niño threshold, will continue to strengthen through the summer.

The SOI was +6.86 today. 

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.346 today. 

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied near 53% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal August (1991-2020 normal). August will likely finish with a mean temperature near 76.3° (0.2° above normal). 

Supplemental Information: The projected mean would be 1.0° above the 1981-2010 normal monthly value.

No it really does not LOL. We regularly get 90 degrees to about the middle of September. You have August confused with October. And even October isn't all that cool anymore. Make it November.

Also why would anyone want to rush in cold weather? I'd rather not shell out a thousand dollars a month in heating costs, thanks.

The big story this summer is how much warmer it is than past developing super El Niño summers. Some stations approached all-time highs back in early July. But the smoke prevented more 100° readings back in mid-July.

LGA came the closest at 99°. We could already begin to see the influence of the trees in Central Park after the new ASOS was installed in the shade in 1995. During the July 1991 heatwave Riverhead also made it to 100°.  But the old Central Park station not under trees made it to 102°.

75 / DP: 61 clear with clouds clinging to the southern half of the region into SNJ.  Enough sun and the hotter places could get to 90 otherwise upper 80s max. Pretty much a 3 peat Wed-Thu-Fri before drier cooler air comes in Sat and most of Sunday although Sunday - Monday could trend warmer with the ridge to our west flexing but it looks to coincide with the next front and chance for showers/storms.  The period 8/17 - 8/20 near normal then overall warmer beyond there with hints the western ridge builds heat and links with the southeast ridge with a window of some heat coming this way 8/21 - 8/25 period.  Tropics pickingup but most look Atlantic formed and bound.

1985: The "New Lisbon Tornado" F2 tornado set down south of Kendall, WI, destroying a barn and damaging a home before moving northeast into Juneau County. A couple was killed and 22 others were injured in Juneau County. Numerous trees and power lines were downed, including 100 acres of forest at Buckhorn State Park. Over $620,000 in damage occurred. 1999: Severe thunderstorms developed in west central Illinois during the early evening, and moved to the Indiana border during the next several hours. Winds gusting over 80 mph caused over $50 million dollars in crop damage to Schuyler, Mason, Menard, Logan, Cass, Morgan and Scott Counties. 2004: Hurricane Charley was the third named storm and the second hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. Charley lasted from August 9 to August 15, and at its peak intensity, it attained 150 mph winds, making it a strong Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. It made landfall in southwestern Florida at maximum strength, making it the most powerful hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992.

 

2004: Bonnie made landfall as a 45 mph (72 km/h) tropical storm just south of Apalachicola, Florida on August 12. It accelerated northeastward, and became a remnant area of low pressure on August 14 to the southeast of New Jersey.

2005 - A tornado strikes Wright, Wyoming, a coal-mining community, killing two and destroying 91 homes and damaging about 30 more in around the town.

Yeah the timing really sucks -- clear skies today but clouds come in tonight. We have a problem with the wildfire smoke right now too, but I see HRRR has it clearing out just in time for the meteor shower tonight. So we'll have to see what happens with the showers/storms for overnight tonight. Hopefully there will be a period or two in which it's just partly cloudy instead of mostly cloudy so we can see some meteors here tonight. I wish you good luck in seeing some tonight.

It is frustrating that we have the clouds to deal with tonight because the same thing happened on the peak night of the Geminid meteor shower in December, which of course is the other big meteor shower. It's frustrating when we have little to no moon interference for viewing but clouds mess it up. Bad luck with these meteor showers lately.

Climo does start fighting back hard. Late august and september are the time of year with the steepest declines in the highs. Yes 90s can happen but it gets significantly harder than in june and july. Also interesting take that anything less than 90s and upper 80s is "cold". Are you a reptilian?

Also as bluewave says, summers have been more front loaded as of late. The last seriously hot late summer was back in 2023 with a run of mid 90s the first week of september.

Also why would anyone want to rush in cold weather? I'd rather not shell out a thousand dollars a month in heating costs, thanks.

I desperately need the A.C. on all summer. I'm not comfortable in the heat at all, so my electric bill is high in the summer. I actually do much better in the cold.

Was surprised to see the TWC app calling for 1 to 2 inches, locally heavy rain for North NJ into Hudson Valley yet NWS said a quarter to half inch.

 

How are short range models looking? no alerts to TS or flood watch by NWS
