i wanted to ask you about the 80s. Is Feb 11-12th, 1983 the only big region wide historic snowstorm that decade? That's the only one i could find on the NESIS site and its the only one i mapped out on our site for the 1980s. Anything else that was widespread 12"+ snowfall in the 80s?

That was the first real snowstorm I can recall growing up. 9 yrs old when that occurred.

Tuesday looks tucky.

Might set the stage for Wed morning…been watching the potential for some nasty black ice and light freezing rain for that time due to some mesolow type stuff going on that starts on Tuesday and may go into Wednesday. .

Based on my own personal observations .. .the comparison between the recent decade and the 1980s has less real analytic value.

The snow results are largely coincidental.    Getting there via different means and not very good analogs.

Beyond that ... yeah, in the spirit of commiseration I suppose both periods were unfriendly to snow enthusiasts than okay, it's a 100% analog. haha.

Sure. I don’t think anyone would disagree.

Yup thanksgiving of 89 was a good one. Feb 83 and April of 82, and yes the late March 84 was good here too.  …those are the biggies for CT in the 80’s. Those others that Will mentioned were for eastern areas…missed here in CT.

Grew up in Cranston and December 81 was a massive bust on the positive side, I remember it well. I think the meat of it was Saturday, just kept snowing beyond what was forecast.

No need for commiseration down here in the banana belt.  We are at 14" on January 4rth...that's a strong start for us!

Btw we had about 3 or 4 tenths here this morning. Just a minor refresher. Looks nice. Would be nice to get a bigger system.

Tuesday might try to give a couple inches.

Agreed. Another clipper but a little more potent than this AMs.

Oh the irony… we spent years wondering where the clippers had gone and wishing for the back. And now they’re all we can get.

Said this exact thing last week. Be careful what you wish for as the old saying goes, you just might get it. And We got it.

I think last year and this year are more closely 1980s. On the colder side but less snow. The 2020-2023 period was just us cosplaying Virginia winters.

Lack of snow in the 1980s was not due to lack of cold. It was just an imperfect track pattern and persistent drought/dryness. Aside from last year where suppression was an issue, most of our issues since 2020 have been that it's too warm for snow. Look at all those benchmark tracks in 2020, 2023, and 2024 that brought rain to most of us because there wasn't enough cold supply. That's where the climate change argument kicks in, but we'll hold off on that for now.

As I day in golf all the time, there are no pictures on the scorecard. All we remember are the results.

NAM and RGEM definitely slide that feature along south coast and across the canal.

well ... there's a bit of an elephant in the room where 'it's happened before' ...etc, but this is a different beast - maybe...

I’m just spoofing the sensible weather more than pattern. It’s not like we’re dumping -30C 850s into the Plains. We’ve been in a consistent nook of cold with systems that don’t have a lot of chance to amplify in time for us. So yeah…sensibly kinda like the 80s so far without any true brutal airmasses yet.
