Good morning from Carlisle, where it is white and very cold.  Fresh snowfall (albeit very light) combined with no wind and clear skies provided ideal radiational cooling overnight which allowed my temperature to drop all the way down to +3.4 degrees F, the coldest of the season thus far.  That inch of snow that fell yesterday afternoon was just enough to radiate down into the single digits.  Having read through all the morning posts it looks like many of us dropped below 10 degrees overnight.  And, my prediction from last night regarding THV came true.  I said I thought York would drop to zero, and they did, hitting -1 F.

With this week's snow event across Chester County PA we are now up to 9.9" of snow so far this season. Through the end of December our typical average snow total is 7.1". So, what could this mean for our snow totals by the time the final flake falls possibly as late as April? Well to date this is the 36th snowiest December with records back to 1893. Below is all 36 years along with where we ended up for seasonal snow that winter. Of note 25 of the 35 years or 71% of the time we ended up with above average seasonal snowfall. Average seasonal snowfall ranges between 32" to 36" across the county. The overall average snowfall across these 35 years was 48.4" of snow. The greatest seasonal snow was the 95.0" that fell in 1898-1899 and the least was the 17.1" in 1912-1913. For Team Snow you should feel fairly good that we end up with above average snowfall this season.

18z GFS is still trying to give us the chance of some light snow or mix with 2 wave potentials toward Christmas.

How cold has the first half of December been....well here in Chester County PA with 132 years of climate data this December is the 11th coldest start to the final month of the year. Below are the 20 coldest first halfs of December. While we will moderate a bit to near or slightly above normal for the remainder of this month we will still end December with below normal temperatures and finish the 2025 calendar year with 7 of the 12 months averaging below normal temperatures.

yesterday watching uploaded abc27 weather the fink as I call him stated and I quote. If you like white christmas this is the closet you will get. from yesterday's snowfall. this week will warm up and thursday will wash the snow away with rain then we go into a warm period. Please oh please let the updated snow for christmas happen

I am really looking forward to this warm up. In addition to frozen caps and valves in the trailer, we have to deal with an icy ground truth, and salt just won't cut through that much ice because each load puts more water on the ground. The is what we deal with at the loading locations.

Yes a much needed warmup. I'm sure some on here won't agree. I know it's the holidays where most of us want snow and cold , it sets the tone for the holidays. But i'm sure there will be more winter weather to be had...probably when were ready for spring in the latter part of March.

I'm thinking we warm for the holiday weeks when I have multiple days off. Then, come January, when it's back to regular work weeks, we tank again.

0z & 6z GFS both showed potential for Christmas wintry weather with a possible icy mix & snow for most of CTP.

The Canadian last night had a mix as well. The Euro was not on board.

We need that, especially in the liquid form. Some of our wells have really taken a hit with the dryness, and now frozen precipitation and ground. One of the wells can only handle one truck per hour. If we don't space the trucks, we'll draw from the ground and not the silo. If the water lever gets below the pump in the bore hole, we'll burn it up, which will be a major and expensive problem. Even with the warm up, I'm not sure how much of that liquid gets into the water table and how much runs off.

I'm wondering that too, how far the down the ground is frozen. If it will run off.

My current temp is 31.6 and it will climb above freezing at any moment. This will end a nice little 79 hour streak of continuous sub-freezing temps going back to 2am on Sunday morning.

The past 3 days have been wonderfully wintry.
