There also seems to be a more wide spread list of 100 degrees readings in 1977 and the 2022 list seems to be just the eastern N.J. area around Newark.

The network that I used doesn’t cover the NYC micronet and the NJ mesonet . So we have to use micronet sources for the 5 boroughs of NYC. Several of the COOPs around NYC in 1977 closed. There were multiple 100° days in the 5 boroughs during this heatwave.

The tree growth covering the Central Park ASOS has made its highest temperatures closer to Suffolk County than the rest of our urbanized areas since 2013. Central Park hasn’t reached 99° since the 2013 summer. Islip has come closer to 100 than NYC over these years. The list below is our highest summer temperatures since 2013. The multiple 100° days at the NYC micronet stations aren’t on this list since it’s on  a separate network. So this is the 2nd longest streak below 99° in NYC since 1873.

Break in the heat and depending on how much clearing today, end of the string of 90 degree readings for most who didnt end on Monday.  Wed (7/27) remains warm and sun should push temps near 90 and above at the warmer spots.   The Western Atl Ridge builds west and A push of stronger heat and humid air  comes through Thu (7/28) and into Fri (7/29) but  with it more storms and and showers, so temperatures should be capped in the lower 90s.  We'll see if Thu/Fri can get rains to those who hve been missing.

The weekend looks warm and dry , a few spots can get to 90 with recent dryness but overall mid/upper 80s.

Beyond

Overall warmer pattern building over much of the nation as Rockies ridge and Western Atlanic ridge connect and stronger heat looks to setup nd push east by early August.

Tonight it's WAR doing it. GFS seems determined to attain the 3 H's and that 100 degree heat at Central Park.

WX/PT

Growing signal on ECM/GFS for that period to have strong ridging into the GL/OV and into the EC.  Still in the 8-10 day range, will see how it progresses.   WOnder if the tropics can wake up.

That will be our next chance of 100s with widespread 850 mb temperatures from +20C to +24C.

This may be the first time that our area had multiple days of 100° heat with a trough over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. The 10 event 100° day composite from 2010 to 2021 featured a strong ridge over the Northeast instead. So the steadily warming summer climate is finding new 500mb patterns to deliver extended 100° heat into our area.

Recent extended 100° heat
