January 30-February 1 Winter Storm Part 2

Recommended Posts

Made it to the office safely, drive time actually wasn't too bad with less cars out but the roads were trash as you'd expect. Just before I got here, had to help push a car up a hill on the road near my office and a little bit farther along a pickup was towing a sedan out of a ditch. Was heavy snow the whole drive in. We're about to do our 06z measurement. When I left home was estimating about 4" in southeast Naperville. Glad the forecast is working out pretty well for most of the area.

Mixing line finally pushed south with some decent bands pivoting over me as the 850mb low that janetjanet998 pointed out nears my area.

traffic cams showing northern Knoxville Ave already snowpacked with decent snow falling while other main roads further south just wet and only a few flakes

Gradient setting up very sharply near I74 like forecasted. Currently have a nice band stalled here for now.

Looking through reports, it seems like it has been around a 10:1 ratio in Chicagoland.  Some places a hair less, some a hair more.

A very wet and slushy 1.1" of snow and sleet in IC. This is easily the worst snow event of the winter here by far. From starting as rain, sitting in sleet for far longer than forecast, and the drying of precip as we switched to snow, just unenjoyable all around.

As I feared, heavy sleet into Allen County, Ohio. Stupid models have done it again missing late north shifts. You know what that means for the entire trough setup since its sharper than expected.

I'm up to 3.1" thanks to a real nice band that has parked over Cedar Rapids for a few hours.  While hlcater has been screwed down in Iowa City, up in Cedar Rapids we've done about as well as we could have.

Worked out fine up here in N.Cook I've been shoveling every couple hours. Drier than I was anticipating/(fearing?). Windy. No viable measurements available. Forecast details aren't as important as the well presented lead-time "heads-up" messaging which also well stated the uncertainties.

Dry air stanks

Snow hasn’t been able to make it north of that line. 00z DTX sounding had a very dry layer just above the surface. So far that’s still winning out. Probably will be a real struggle to get more than 1.5” -2” total.

Got a real shot to approach a foot here if the 6z NAM qpf works out.  It has about .5" more precip from 9z onward.

9z RAP has around 0.50” for metro as well, after 12z.

I’ll match those pics when the sun rises. How’s 1” of rain at 34 degrees sound? Miserable? You betcha
