23.5" final total here.  There was some major compaction going on in this long duration heavy snow event.  Using an official method of measuring snow likely would have added a few inches to this total.  My view is it's new snow actually on the ground at the time of measurement that is most important to convey the storm's impact, but that's just me.

22 in commack western side of town). A bit lower than the 26 reports from commack and dix hills. Guess there were localized pockets here. Report in Elwood of 22 which is a few miles away matches up well.

I think northshorewx total of 17 is low...doesnt really matchup to the other reported totals in our area

I took multiple measurements and have a preliminary average of 18.8", but I'm a bit east of you guys. I'm gonna keep measuring different areas, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I averaged 20" last night, but that was only from two areas.

I get that a lot of people aren't fans of the fluke 2006 record, but I feel like if a record is going to be broken, it should be broken by at least an inch or 2. I'm actually pretty surprised they didn't crack 30 yesterday. It seems like it takes something even more anomalous than yesterday'storm to get those solid +30 amounts in the nyc area. DC and Boston have it a little easier in that respect.

How so? Boston and WDC have never had a 30 inch storm.

Dulles airport is in Virginia and 35 miles outsdie WDC. TWC constantly uses that as a WDC total which it is not. The officiail totals at Reagan airport is the only station in WDC those are the only totals that are actually in Washington.

reports on staten island alone seem rather variable....25 to 31 plus inches....seems like a large spread

Happens every big storm for all areas...we discuss it every winter.  My totals are often on the lower end...maybe some inflate for some reason or maybe its just the difficulties of measuring larger windy snowstorms.

Closest measurement to Long Beach looks to be 24" in Island Park.

Saw many gaps in SW Nassau for totals on the interactive map. Since Upton carved us out as 30-36" would have been nice to see how off that was..I would do Oceanside myself expect for the massive amt of drifts here. Wind was kicking like mad. Nothing's level here...

Guess it's hard to say but how much do you think you have in Oceanside? I measured 18" or so in Boxing Day, but the photos I saw were definitely more than we had then, and the band was parked overhead for another few hours, JFK coming in with over 30" also leads me to believe parts of S Nassau really did have over 2 feet.

I'm curious about using WDC rather than DC here.  Are you concerned we might confuse DC for some other DC?  The comics publisher?  Direct current?

Well, we got this:

A record all time daily snowfall of 26.6 inches was set at Central Park yesterday. This breaks the old record of 24.1 set on Feb 12 2006.

To me, that is a more impressive record..  greatest snowfall in a single day. That means it fell harder and faster than any storm on record, at least within a calendar day.

seeing the airports and central park come in with huge totals definitely leads me to believe in the monster quality of the totals in the nyc area...and i think those amounts at lga and jfk were depth measurements...

the storm was long duration and there of course would be settling and compaction...i think something like 10 pct or even 15 pct is reasonable (and probably congruent with cleaning a board every six hours for the most part)

where things get confusing and inflated in my opinion is when someone is out shoveling frequently or someone measures in a drift. In feb of 2001 when i lived in central ct we got a big snowstorm and it snowed on average 1.5 to 3 inches an hour for the duration of a storm that lasted under 12 hrs from start to finish..probably ten hours of solid snowfall max. Shoveling four times i measured a total of 22 inches but at the end of the storm the depth was only 17.5-18 inches so it stands to reason that someone who reported thirty inches from many trips outside to shovel or clearing the board more than six hour increments could be quite inflated..esp in a longer storm, maybe by several inches..

what i am trying to takeaway from this is that those who were left with two foot depths probably had snowfalls three or four inches greater than the final depth but not much more than that

regardless i am in awe of what happened down there yesterday

sounds like places that got dry slotted or stuck in .5 to 1.5 inch hr snows still wound up with 15 to 20 plus inches while those who got in on the better banding were in the range of 2-2.5 feet..

congrats on an epic event! a 15 to 30 inch event area wide for upton...minus a bit on the northern fringes...is remarkable and your cwa is pretty big.

I wonder if JFK was always measuring snow on the roof because even their totals in storms in the 80s and 90s were less than LGA. Supposedly they have stopped measuring that way but I remember that story coming out in the 2013-14 winter

I measured 19" in February 2006 in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island...Other parts of the island had less to my south and west......
