We watch. KEY MESSAGE 3 Discussion... Cold trend continues for the forecast winter storm late Saturday into Sunday. High pressure to the NW will aid in feeding cool air at the surface from the NE through Saturday evening. Still a good signal in guidance for CAD to keep surface temps below freezing for much of southern ME and central/north NH. No change in thinking regarding primary low track out of the Great Lakes. Still some differences in guidance re: transfer to coastal low, and this will have impact on QPF and temperature profile aloft for precip type. Continue to think foothills northward remain mainly snow until after midnight, in which sleet then mixes in. A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will be possible for points in the foothills and interior, with mostly rain into southern NH and far southern NH. Should cold trend continue, would see wintry mix hold on longer and closer to the ME coast. -
You would want to see the Northern Stream across the Great Lakes with all those lows racing east back off in order to give the Southern Stream an opportunity to lead.

BIG CHANGES NEXT WEEK THIS WEEK IN WEATHER JAN 7-8 2026 -
Well the forecasters at Mammoth increased the forecast from 1-2 inches tonight, to 3-5 inches overnight. Well - it is 15 degrees with high winds and heavy snow and radar has more and they already have 5 inches on the ground and I think that they just might have to update that accumulation forecast one more time lol.

While numerous locations in the U.S. experienced their warmest December on record, spots like Fairbanks had their 8th coldest December. So the magnitudes of the warmth was greater in the the West. But Juneau was able to record their 2nd coldest December which was very impressive. Parts of Canada had their coldest December since 1980 but the coldest winters on record occurred in the colder era before then. But the warmth in recent winters in Canada was of a higher magnitude than the cold this month was. Climatologist49 @climatologist49.bsky.social Follow Fairbanks, AK, finishes December 2025 with a monthly temperature departure of 18.2F below normal. The average high temp was -14.5F and the average low temp was -31.1F. This makes it the 8th coldest December on record (1904-present) and the coldest since 1980. @alaskawx.bsky.social 9:02 PM · Dec 31, 2025

Not sure why you keep saying that, it's not really only 2 weeks old. Only Karens use astronomical winter. Meteorological winter is a fixed, three-month period used by meteorologists for consistent record-keeping, covering the coldest months: December, January, and February in the Northern Hemisphere -

It's amazing how so many people wish summer away, to get to the cold gray rain for 5 months that have become our winters. -
This is one of the biggest winter punts I can remember. Since our little snow events December 8-16 we will have punted till likely January 15 at the earliest. 30 days of winter without a single threat to track is brutal, even for here

Welcome back to the asylum! -
I was only about six to eight miles west of a solid foot. I recorded eight inches total which included about an inch and a half ull stuff Mon night. Average forecast around here was 18-20 inches. I would've been ok with a foot and a few hours of heavy falling snow with decent growth.

Snowiest winter near me occurred twice since 1990. 1995-96 and 2009-10 topped at around ~72" on the season for both. 95-96 had 30" in one storm, im sure you can figure out the storm, and 09-10 had back to back nearly 2 foot storms in less than a week. Just 3 years ago we set our lowest snowfall ever recorded of .9" We average around 26" -

Speaking of venting tonight Mammoth was only supposed to get 2 inches. But that snow is falling pretty hard for only a couple inches.
