you mowed too soon

should have let it get longer before mowing

It needed it two weeks ago. Mowed again yesterday. It’s been very dry . May 20 is the magic date each year for lawns in terms of when they look best and at peak. After that date it’s all down hill

Yeah…. Stein has become an annual thing. Absolutely destroyed my lawn last year. Downright murdered my new grass and I don’t think I mowed from like July yo September.

Did my second mowing at Pit2 lastnight and discovered the lawn really looks crappy.  It had always been pretty darn good looking, so I'm not sure what happened to it over the last 6 months.

Biggest problem is there's suddenly a bunch of dandelions.  A secondary concern is other types of things (not crabgrass) that' appearing.

What do you recommend for getting rid of at least the dandelions?  I cold probably put down some seed as well.  I  need to do things in the right order.

Help!

Sounds like you’re not fertilizing enough or at all . Too late to kill dandie’s now . You can spot treat with spray but that won’t prevent those nasty things from coming back next year. If you don’t fertilize , the lawn will continue to deteriorate like that each year

If you dont want to look at them for another 2 weeks (as flowering winds down), pull them with one of those extendable tools. Like $30 on Amazon.  Next year hit them with pre-emergent (corn gluten) like the 2nd week of April, then the 1st week of May.  It'll take care of that other grass, too.  It's remarkably effective.

Putting any synthetic fertilizer or herbicide that close to water is about the worst thing you could do.  And it won't do anything for your current situation, either.

Look at all those dandelions for the bees! :P

 Its funny, I was reading something a little while back that Dandelions really aren't a great food source for our native bees. No Mow May can provide some benefits with natural food sources with native stuff, but we also have a lot invasive weeds that can spread a ton of unwanted weeds seeds as well (that are not any benefit for pollinators and can be aggressive in spreading).

I'm not saying a perfect manicured lawn is a better option, but there are definitely are a lot native perennials and shrubs that you can plant that provide a better food source for most of our native pollinators.

downhill decline has been rapid this year,  the portions of my lawn that aren't reached by the irrigation system have stopped growing completely

Took a walk along each side of the road in front of the house…

Tons of poison ivy on boths sides. Noticed some last year, but it’s nuts this year and  is now trying to work into my yard.

Tons of ragweed starting

And a 2 stalk clump of knotweed about 2ft tall

They use bottom of the barrel fill along the road and let the invasives go nuts. Then they go around with chems spraying the shit a couple of years later.

Maddening

i noticed the PI is thriving this year. i try to stay on top of it and spray it with a targeted weed spray every year (I use poison ivy killer, only targets viney stuff including oriental bittersweet), this year the plants are bigger with huge leaves.

good luck with the knotweed, there are a bunch of different removal strategies out there (most are voodoo), but unless you use ROund Up or similar, you are unlikely to succeed

It was a pioneer clump. I check for it every year because I'm paranoid. I think I got it early enough with all roots before it could send out the rhizomes.

good luck. i have seen knotweed in my area, but not in my 'hood. but i do keep a close eye out for it. I hate the invasive crap. meanwhile, pretty much every beech tree in my 'hood is either dead or dying. sad, as I really like the look of beeches.
