Got this from @growingwisdom on twitter. What I find most interesting besides being the coldest 75 day start to winter in Boston since 93-94 is it’s colder than every 80s winter besides 81 and on par with 82.  
I thought the 80s were much colder, I have no recollection as I was born in 85.

The 1980s are pretty cold on that graph. The defining feature is really no huge torches of any kind outside of the super Nino ‘82-83 winter. So while they didn’t have utterly frigid winters post-82, they consistently were below normal on temps.

They were cold…I was a teenager during the 80’s…And while they were consistently cold, the snow sucked 85-90% of the time.
 

There were a few big ones scattered in there, but it was underwhelming most of the time.  Mixing was very common. It was like pulling teeth to get a pure snow event during that decade.  1-3” and 2-4” were very common. 3-6” was a good storm.  And the beloved 4-8” was a biggy.    of course there was the April Blizzard of 82 which was a monster, and Feb of 83 was big.  And 1984 was a decent snow winter.  Mid March of 84 had a good 8-10” storm. And then a couple weeks later in late March of 84 there was a pretty big late season snow storm around the 30-31st, which was pretty dam good for that decade. 
 

And as Will said…they were consistently BN.  So it just goes to show how this winter has been dam cold.

I recall that mid-march '84 storm, freshman year of high school, was the last time we got out of class due to snow.  Couldn't buy a day off for the rest of my high school career. Zip, nada, nothing.

Thank God I didn't have to live through the shitty 80s, being 0-4 i have zero memory of anything from then. Pretty much just 2000 and beyond

Yup…I was a sophomore..so we are only a year apart.  Good times though…just very stingy snow lol.  When you live through a decade like that….it allows you to appreciate the good times, and not take them for granted. It puts things into a good perspective.

The 80s weren't as bad as everyone thinks. 1985-1986 and 1988-1989 were awful but the rest of the decade particularly the first half of the decade was damn good particularly along the south coast. We had several big ones, including some like December 1981 that no one remembers or talks about. Slant sticking is more common today than back then and I believe the statistical snowfall averages are somewhat skewed. I remember catching the school bus and it seemed a lot colder back then compared to the last 20+ years.

I’m talking CT here…not south coast/or eastern mass.   The decade as I said had a few big events scattered around. But overall it was a very low snow decade to be sure.

I’ve said on here many times before that the December 81 storm was one of my favorites. The flow remained NNW during the storm. Had it been NNE that time of year it would have mostly rained like in December, 1992.

The 81-82 winter turned out very good for the interior, especially CNE. I was in central NH for a weekend in late January, 1982 and the pack was like 3 feet.

NNE was a different story in the 80’s. SNE was the tough spot most times. Tons of mixed events…it was very hard(but obviously not impossible) to get a pure snow storm then in SNE.  Was just the pattern/cycle back then.

Yes. I agree. I should also note that at least for here the cold periods in the 80s were also punctuated by very warm periods. So I find it no different from the warm spells we have now.

A lot of bad tracks/cutters. Cold, warm up rain, cold again. Or front end snow to mix to freezing rain to rain, then get cold again and freeze everything up. Lots of good sledding/sliding back then for sure, due to the icy hard snow conditions. Lots of fun in that regard.

I was born in 1970. There were a couple that were cold for certain short periods,  and many that almost felt like months of extended late fall. It was a terrible decade for winter,  with just a select few notable events mixed in. Observed from my back yard,  I didn't focus much broader at the time  Selfish teen lol
