Times like these are when owning a 4WD vehicle is worth the 13 mpg I get year round. My winch and tow strap were busy yanking plowed in cars throughout the neighborhood. Also had to winch my brother's car out of the driveway at 4:30 this morning so he could make it to the police academy.

Currently out on the gas golf cart "plowing" (I strapped a shovel to the front) the sidewalks open.

i had a chevy colorado for years that was 4wd and it was great i have an awd traverse now and its ok, but it was the front wheel drive minivan that was stuck in the drift. i saw a lot of cars stuck last night; awd is decent in snow.

Melted total for storm just completed 1.55".  Snowfall 13.5".  Storm averaged ratio 8.71/1.  Started out at 20:1 then fell as the event progressed.

Temperature never got above 10 degrees through the entire event.  Hopefully this puts an end to the "it is so cold ratios will be beyond words" stuff.   Cold surface temperatures are not the driving factor in ratios.  Look aloft.

The ratios fell because of the sleet, compaction. During the height of the storm ratios were pretty high.

Now I'm questioning my own 12.2" total because it does seem a bit low compared to others around me.  Admittedly, I did not do the clearing technique which I should, so it was probably more (say 13-14") but it had compacted.  Mom in Lafayette is telling me 16" but admits it was hard to measure.  Either way, I'll take a foot plus.  It was a fun storm.

Don’t question it, you measured it correctly, you should only clear the board once a day, when the storm is over, or changes precip type. There are a lot of inflated totals out there.

Weenies are gonna ween and then there's the jackpot fetish. You have wonder how many know what an actual 6" looks like.

I think on the island totals are pretty accurate. When you compare what the public reports versus the official reports from Upton and Islip, its usually dead on accurate and consistent. Trained spotters usually line up with the official sites as well, so its usually ok out here.

There is one report from Suffolk from Fort Salonga at 14.5" which seems a bit high, but its extreme north shore so it's possible

Centre Island has 15.3” which I also think is probably high even though they’re right on the sound. Oceanside coming in with 11” is quite impressive right on the south shore and is likely even higher in the end since it was during heavy sleet. @uofmiami do you have a total?

12.2" was my total with 1.8" of it being sleet.  I agree that 15.3" reading is a little high IMO.

Making a run at the daily precip record of 1.80" in 1978 (for Jan 25), the warm sector phase of the famous Great Lakes blizzard of Jan 25-26 1978. That may have included a bit of snow or sleet but was mostly if not all rain in NYC.

Also the snowfall is now (I think) ahead of the old record value of 10.0" from 1905.

Per NOAA, CP ended the day with 1.82 inches.
