Admittedly, I did not do the clearing technique which I should, so it was probably more (say 13-14") but it had compacted. Mom in Lafayette is telling me 16" but admits it was hard to measure. Either way, I'll take a foot plus. It was a fun storm. Don’t question it, you measured it correctly, you should only clear the board once a day, when the storm is over, or changes precip type. There are a lot of inflated totals out there. 1

There are a lot of inflated totals out there. I think on the island totals are pretty accurate. When you compare what the public reports versus the official reports from Upton and Islip, its usually dead on accurate and consistent. Trained spotters usually line up with the official sites as well, so its usually ok out here. There is one report from Suffolk from Fort Salonga at 14.5" which seems a bit high, but its extreme north shore so it's possible
jm1220
Centre Island has 15.3” which I also think is probably high even though they’re right on the sound. Oceanside coming in with 11” is quite impressive right on the south shore and is likely even higher in the end since it was during heavy sleet. @uofmiami do you have a total? I agree that 15.3" reading is a little high IMO. 2

That may have included a bit of snow or sleet but was mostly if not all rain in NYC. Also the snowfall is now (I think) ahead of the old record value of 10.0" from 1905. Per NOAA, CP ended the day with 1.82 inches.

weatherpruf
capitol weather gang has an excellent write up on the challenges of forecasting this unique storm in the washington post, not sure how to link, but it is making the rounds online with no firewall. in short, this was a historic sleet storm, one for the ages. jm1220
It absolutely looks like 11-12” fell here and then some. The mall piles will be huge. Sleet is a buzzkill when it’s happening but we’re thankful tomorrow and after. It’s just hell trying to shovel it, but excellent for building and keeping snowpack. 1
