I dont understand why people thought the cooler ocean would weaken it, it rained for over 12 hours here and we had well over an inch on the south shore.  The oceans are much warmer now, the ocean won't be weakening anything anymore, if anything it adds more moisture to make the rain heavier.

It did weaken as it moved east, LI/CT got 1/3 to 1/4 of what areas further west got....it was just so massive that even the weakened version gave us all .75-1.25

It's unbelievable that this happened just a week and a half after our area was devastated by that incredibly severe t-storm that had 70 to 80mph winds.

It's like we can't get a nice moderate rain anymore, it's either a drought or a deluge lol.  Mother Nature has become our enemy now, it's probably better to have a drought and do our own watering rather than a lethal and costly flood.

Good morning Don. The NWS Central Park observation showed 2:53 inches of the precipitation occurring between 17:51 and 20:51 with 2.07 occurring in a one hour period 18:52 to 19:51. My question relates to the listed weather observation. It indicated light rain between 17:51 and 19:51. An upgrade to rain in the final hour ending 20:51. Are the observations time snapshots because they don’t seem to represent the actual occurrence, especially the 2.07 hour. Im not criticizing, just trying to understand for future reference. Stay well, as always ….

The intensity of the precipitation e.g., "light rain" is only at the point of observation e.g., 19:51. Here's a more complete record during the heavy rainfall:

I dont understand why people thought the cooler ocean would weaken it, it rained for over 12 hours here and we had well over an inch on the south shore.  The oceans are much warmer now, the ocean won't be weakening anything anymore, if anything it adds more moisture to make the rain heavier.

It absolutely did. Amounts drop of a cliff east of the queens border. The east end barely saw a shower.

Yes, but it was a nice transition zone sort of like the March 1993 superstorm when JFK got 12 inches, Oceanside got 10 inches and Massapequa only got 6 inches.  Divide that by 10 and you got the rainfall total from this storm lol.  We got over an inch of rain here.

I feel bad for SE Nassau which got much less.

I'm confused what would cause the weakening though because the oceans are extremely warm now, in the mid 70s.

It’s the sea breeze. You can see the exact thing play out in Florida everyday with water temps there in the mid 80s. It has to do with locally higher pressure over and near the water. As the land heats and warms it creates an area of lower pressure which acts as a focusing mechanism inland. Enhanced convection 30-50 miles inland is exactly what we saw yesterday.

I knew we had a lot of rain here, now we're under a flood advisory and it includes Oceanside, Atlantic Beach, Long Beach, Freeport, Massapequa, Bellmore, etc.

I'm confused, yesterday was fairly hot and got up to 88 here before the clouds moved in, it wasn't an Ambrose jet sea breeze kind of day.

Well we didn’t have the 5-7+ inch totals over NJ and the Hudson Valley, and the radar clearly showed the storms collapsing as they went east of the city. They essentially rained themselves out over LI. August is typically when we have our higher end rain events likely because the waters are warmest then.

The water never gets as warm as the land on a sunny summer day. But as we get later into the summer that effect is less and less pronounced. With less solar insulation and water temps at maximum the sea breeze mechanism is muted. Plus you generally have the highest PWAT potential in August.

FWIW White Plains Airport (HPN) and Westchester County Airport are the same facility. Located in Westchester County, New York, it serves the surrounding area including the city of White Plains. It is often referred to by both names.

Yes, I'm aware of that. That's why I noted the difference between the PNS (2.95") and the climate record entry (3.38").

Well we didn’t have the 5-7+ inch totals over NJ and the Hudson Valley, and the radar clearly showed the storms collapsing as they went east of the city. They essentially rained themselves out over LI. August is typically when we have our higher end rain events likely because the waters are warmest then.

I'm glad it rained here most of the morning, it actually feels drier now with the sun out.

The water never gets as warm as the land on a sunny summer day. But as we get later into the summer that effect is less and less pronounced. With less solar insulation and water temps at maximum the sea breeze mechanism is muted. Plus you generally have the highest PWAT potential in August.

Would a nice strong offshore wind like we got in late June that got us over 100 degrees also make for bigger storms since the land breeze keeps the ocean influence away?

4" in Bridgewater and Manville area and I'm 10 mins west of them and got .75"

Crazy

Thank God there was a sharp cutoff yesterday.  I feel bad for those that got flooded, but very thankful we didn't get that.
