Ice/Snow threat Friday-Sunday

Recommended Posts

Northern Guilford at the Rockingham county line has been clobbered. Outages everywhere. I’m at 0.30” and large limbs have fallen.  Roads are fine.

Duke didn’t sound optimistic that power would be restored anytime soon.

Thankfully, I had the propane topped off two weeks ago.  I can go a good bit on the generator.

30% of Duke Energy customers in Guilford County are without power.

Only about 10% of High Point electric customers are still without power now after hitting 50% late this morning.

I feel very fortunate to have only lost it for a couple hours.

I don't doubt it... Charleston SC had a thunderstorm with heavy rain at 41... Back here in Goose Creek at work, 39° with same heavy rain/thunderstorm..

Spectrum says we might not have internet and cable until Tuesday.
Oh, the humanity.

FYI. The cable plant runs off power as well. Often times, the cable may not be damaged. Just out due to a commercial power outage.

That’s what it looked like here this morning before we got over 33. Never did get above 33 as well.

I will post some shots from Henderson tomorrow (Sunday). They are via drone and from the ground. Quite a bit of tree damage there near thr quarry area. Ice accrual was probably around 0.3 inches or so and it had already been melting by the time I got there.

Looks like there could be a bit of a round two tonight with up to a tenth of an inch in Northern Durham/Orange/Caswell/Person counties.

My daughter lives in Anniston Alabama. Does she have anything to worry about as far as freezing rain or ice in the next five days or so?

If you look at the woods across the street you can see a good example of a marginal temp ice event with a warm ground.  Almost a straight horizontal line between the iced branches and the no ice branches close to the ground.

Taken by Kendall Clanton. This is I 85 near DeWitt, VA today.  Having driven this stretch many times, it is loaded with Pine Trees on both side of the interstate

It is THE wors t stretch of interstate ive ever driven. Yes so many pine trees right beside the interstate creates this gauntlet effect!  But i dont wish this ice storm on anyone. Prayers for safety!

Ice storm a few years back made 220 south (now 74 or 73 I think) headed towards Pinehurst look just like this.  Several miles of pines laying on the road before they cleared it all out.  I would be hard pressed to sit calmly in my vehicle.

Some drone shots I grabbed in Henderson NC after work before it got dark. It was already beginning to melt by this time:

Sad part is, when they rebuilt I 85 the last few years and really cut back the trees in NC, VA not as much

I sense that for some bizarre reason, Virginia thinks it’s cool to have an interstate go through a dense pine forest.

Its VDOT, enough said. If it doesnt pertain to Northern Virginia they can care less
