January 2nd/3rd Storm Observations

Yes - great for those - was thinking that as well earlier today.

I will say the skiing today was excellent for only 3" of snow...the dense arctic sugar of 8-10:1 ratio snow at below zero temps made it ski deeper than 3". The funny thing is, in a lot of upslope situations, the same 1/3" QPF would deliver like 8-12" of snow, lol.

What likely caused it? Couldn't have been lack of cold in the growth levels. Lack of moisture? I thought the skews looked good...

Most of the lift that gave s the snow was very low - around 925mb or so through most of the storm. Had some low level stuff during the day yesterday that was all really low and then the stuff last night - at least the good comma head stuff never really developed. I thought we'd see a good burst of mid level stuff after midnight but even that didn't really get going. Seemed like a lot of it was some low level convergence with the easterly jet just off the deck.

I'd say a final call of somewhere between 14-15".  Someone else mentioned it, but in North Andover, my office shows less snow now than it did yesterday around 2:00 p.m. when I left.  Compaction ate up probably 30% or more of the snow, so anyone measuring today won't be close to what fell.

Ray, is your current temp really 13?  My car is showing the current as 6 degrees in North Andover.

14.1...I think the sun is throwing it off because the local wx bug reads 10.

Man that's awesome! Congrats. The 4kft picnic tables are jealous

I have no idea how you measure that though...wow. There's absolutely no snow on any roof-tops or elevated surface in those pics...forget a nice elevated snow board for measuring, lol. Any idea on liquid equiv? Any cores (I'd assume ASOS wouldn't even be close)?

This is what i have from GRLEVEL3. It is probably higher in reality though with the ocean enhancement

Newport Ave is completely flooded between stop & shop and Cathay pacific. 2 Mercedes drivers thought it'd be a good idea to go through, they are now stuck. Road is blocked off.

Correction, appears to be located in front of 150 Newport Ave extension by the north Quincy T stop.

Definitely a colder boxing day. Interior areas really struggle in these type of setups. It definitely was an eastern new england storm. There was no really strong lift or deform bands that usually cash the interior in. The stronger banding was well south of new england and out over the ocean. OES saved eastern areas and otherwise you were left high and dry minus the WAA bands. CT screwzone especially with the valley. Not to mention that snowgrowth was hell back there too.

Boston did not get into any crazy banding minus a few hours. However, they were close enough to the fringe of the essex band to consistently produce moderate snow. Then when the best oes went southeast BOS was again close enough to not really be in the core of the band but still bring great snowfall rates. A nice prolonged significant snowfall with extreme temperatures. An absolute treat. Scott's area was absolutely in a perfect spot for last night as I thought he would be. Got into his band for a little while too.

An absolutely historic snowstorm due to the cold air. Not much else outside of Essex county. We have this type of coastal flooding and waves every winter.

I'm going with 15" here in South Boston. I spent my morning shoveling out a bar, a parking lot and adjacent sidewalks, and three cars afterwards. Needless to say I am tired. Haven't started on our three cars yet, only our sidewalk is done. Most sidestreets still snowcovered and packed down like something you would see in New Hampshire or Vermont. My street isn't too bad as it sees a lot of traffic. Only main roads clear in the neighborhood.

My street is a wind tunnel. Not much snow on the cars or sidewalks but streets that face in the opposite direction are buried. Very much 2005 esque. Parked car on one side of the street buried while there is a dusting 5 feet across the street where the wind is blowing.

That Shrewsbury report should jive with ORH right?

That shrewsbury report looks way off. Westborough 2 miles east had 6

There's always an inflated report that comes out of there...not sure where its measured. There's going to be at least some variability though in the measurements with the extreme drifting.

Yeah its complete bull. I measured around 8-9"...on average near the Worcester line at 500' near the high school.

I know who it is...its "SNE Wx Coverage" on twitter... he measures near the center of town. The dude that reports it is on Twitter..This is where it came from

@WX1BOX Here is the view outside my house in Shrewsbury MA where I measured 12.5" total pic.twitter.com/fgTBqsIVEC

Terrible measuring spot.

I'll have to wait until later to see the pic since I can't view twitter at work.

Our friend ma_blizzard measured like 9 inches in Shrewsbury. Combined with 10" in ORH and the 6" report in Westborough (which seems a bit low on the other end), the 12.5 seems a tad high, but who knows.

Yeah I'm sure Matt will confirm we had 8-9" not 12" later.

It looks like a foot..but it also looks like it's right under a roof or something

Yes.

Other (obvious) thing to keep in mind as some people look outside today and are expecting more:

This fluffy dry snow is sublimating much faster than most storms we experience.

For once there's a Logan reading that closely mirrors reports from the greater metro area.

I see Winchester came in with a 14" report must be on the eastside of town. It does not feel like 14.7°F out, it actually feels much warmer but not something I would like to acclimated to. Temps are going to plunge tonight - PNS -5°F. If it does get that cold it will be the lowest I've recorded here.
