Severe (tornado + wind) event looming: 01/30-01/31 Wed.-Thursday

Ground Scouring

Recommended Posts

Some storms can pop off around 7pm though ahead of the squall line...making it seem like it's reached us before it actually has, but I'd definitely listen to the NWS over what the NAM is saying at this point in time, haha. But it definitely has slowed down since last night per the models.

I was hopinh it would come sooner than later. NC doesn't do well with tornadoes overnight.

I was working from home today and the storm missed up by, maybe, 1.5 miles.  It went between where I was and where my daughter was in school. Damage to the town of Adairsville is extensive. I would be surprised if this wasn't an EF-3 at the very least. With all of the roads closed, it took a while to get back to the house. Luckily for us, our subdivision has underground lines and the power just came back on but much of Adairsville is older and may not get power back for a while based on what I witnessed.

Glad you are safe.

I'd be getting pretty nervous if I were in my hometown of Columbia SC to Florence area. Sun out, its hot and look whats coming. Just texted my oblivious sister and parents there to keep an eye to the sky.

Not nervous here ;)  Watching.....yes   The sun has been out a lot more than I expected today and some cells to my northwest are starting to fire.

Statement as of 3:40 PM EST on January 30, 2013

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of

       northwest North Carolina
       southwest Virginia

Effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 340 PM until
1000 PM EST.

Hail to 0.5 inch in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 75
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 50
statute miles east and west of a line from 35 miles north of
Lynchburg Virginia to 75 miles south of Dublin Virginia. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou2).

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Other watch information... continue... ww 21...

Discussion... qlcs is beginning to strengthen as convection moves off
the higher terrain in wrn VA and NW NC... possible related to an
embedded MCV in the larger precipitation shield. Instability is
marginal downstream from this convection and lightning production
will be sporadic at best. However... weak surface-based cape and
minimal convective inhibition will support Transfer of 60-70 kt
momentum aloft to the surface in the heavier showers/bowing
segments.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 0.5 inch. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 65
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 350. Mean storm
motion vector 25045.

Good deal, thanks man. Do you know if more wind reports should accompany that line as it moves east or is it at it's peak now? I thought the LLJ is supposed to strengthen with time....

Not sure about all that, don't know enough to answer your question. Maybe a met can chime in... I know that per the 18z NAM yesterday the surface winds were higher once they reached NC, progged over 60+ mph...the hurricane force winds seen so far weren't progged in that area per earlier NAM runs, I think they were around 40-50 mph in that area. I think we'll see some decent winds, especially for northern NC counties into VA. Maps are archived at instantweathermaps.com

Greg,

It is good to hear you and your family are ok though sad what happened nearby, of course. Wow!

In Dunwoody, I had a quick thunderstorm at 2:30 PM-2:45 PM that produced very heavy rains and gusty winds. Heard only a few rumbles of thunder.

Not too bad..which is fine as I didn't want any tornadoes too close.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0102
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0313 PM CST WED JAN 30 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF CNTRL GA INTO THE WRN CAROLINAS

   CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 21...

   VALID 302113Z - 302315Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 21 CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...THE REMAINDER OF SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA INTO THE SOUTH
CAROLINA PIEDMONT...EAST OF WW 21...WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED
FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INCREASING SEVERE THREAT.  A NEW WW MAY
NOT BE NEEDED IN THE NEAR TERM...BUT ONE MAY BE POSSIBLE LATER THIS
   EVENING.

DISCUSSION...THE LATEST RAPID REFRESH SUGGESTS THAT THE INTENSE
SOUTHERLY 850 MB JET CORE IS IN THE PROCESS OF REDEVELOPING
NORTHEASTWARD INTO THE WESTERN CAROLINAS...BUT A NARROW CORRIDOR OF
50-70 KT 850 MB FLOW IS FORECAST TO LINGER TO THE SOUTH...SHIFTING
SLOWLY EASTWARD ACROSS CENTRAL/EASTERN GEORGIA.  TO THE EAST OF THIS
AXIS...LOWER SURFACE DEW POINTS ASSOCIATED WITH STRONGER BOUNDARY
LAYER WARMING/MIXING IS LIMITING INSTABILITY.  SO...IT APPEARS THE
PRIMARY CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL WILL REMAIN ALONG AND TO THE WEST OF
THIS AXIS...WHERE WEAK BOUNDARY LAYER INSTABILITY AND STRONG
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT A RISK FOR SUPERCELLS WITH
TORNADOES.  THIS IS EXPECTED TO GENERALLY REMAIN TO THE WEST OF THE
COLUMBIA SC AREA INTO THE 00-01Z TIME FRAME.
