Through 9 August (when I moved to Pennsylvania), this is what sticks in my mind. In chronological order:

--overall lack of cold weather and snow in winter 2011-12

--ground-blizzard conditions on the afternoon of 10 February (maybe more because it was my birthday)

--hard-hitting, almost surprise snow (out in DeKalb County) on the afternoon of 2 March; it left 4.2" in less than two hours in DeKalb (city)

--Morch, but especially the period from the 14th until the 25th or so

--very hot Memorial Day weekend, especially Sunday the 26th, when it reached 99 degrees here (and this was made all the more memorable by having to sit for three hours in a 91-degree gymnasium for my brother's high-school commencement ceremony)

--derecho on the night of 29 June

--derecho on the day of 1 July

--very hot summer, but especially the period from 2 to 7 July

--drought, which was most stark (to me, anyway) around mid-July

Because I've been back in Illinois visiting for a little over a week now, I add:

--lack of snow to date for winter 2012-13: only 0.3" on the season as of now

Not much to remember except the heat and drought, which I hope is a distant memory next spring and summer. The months of January, February and early March weren't terrible for snow here, in the upper 20s in terms of inches (a tad below average), but they were still warm. There were some decent storms, some severe, in April and May, but then drought kicked in for the better part of June and July. August was an improvement, and fall wasn't bad, but still a bit boring. Hope was there for a decent December, but it disappointed overall. Still, the last ten days at least reminded me that winter is upon us. Here's to a better, more active 2013!

No true winter, the ground never did freeze more than a crust in our region.

Lack fruit from the torch of March followed by the freeze. Most of the blossoms were fried from the cold.

From here the heat, dryness and the drop of the great lakes thoughout the summer. I think the Detroit river dropped almost 15" during the summer months.

Sandy's winds

Dry fall overall.

For some reason the heavy snow squalls some of SEMI got at the end of January stick out for me...at the time I thought I was just over exaggerating it in my head but I certainty haven't seen snow nearly as heavy as what we had in AA since and looking back at my pictures it was really pretty intense. Visibility easily below a quarter mile and I believe the Yipsy airport had a 40mph gust.

For me two events stand out the most:

-The March torch was just incredible.  Seeing leaves on the trees when a year before there was still snow on the ground and frozen lakes in the area during the same time period.

-4/14 tornadoes in Kansas, my first nighttime tornado near Hesston.  Then having no radar updates due to dead batteries and calling it off, checked into the downtown Wichita Hyatt just before the sirens went off and only realized how serious the situation was when I plugged my phone into an outlet at the lobby bar. That was a scary 20 minutes after that.

Happy New Year everyone.

From GRR...

t's Official! 2012 is the Warmest Year on Record for Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon

Now that 2012 has come to an end, the final numbers have been calculated at our official climate sites for the year at Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon. The final calculations show that each of the three official climate sites had their warmest year on record. Records date back to 1863 at Lansing, and 1896 at Grand Rapids and Muskegon.

Top 3 Average Annual Temperatures Grand Rapids

1. 52.9 degrees - 2012 (New record)

2. 52.4 degrees - 1921

3. 52.3 degrees - 1931

Muskegon

1. 52.6 degrees - 2012 (New record)

2. 50.9 degrees - 1998

3. 50.8 degrees - 2010

Lansing

1. 51.7 degrees - 2012 (New record)

2. 50.6 degrees - 1921

3. 50.3 degrees - 1998

2012 ended up being the warmest year on record as a result of the extremely warm March in which average temperatures were over 14 degrees above average, and as a result of 11 out of the 12 months being above average.

2012 Detroit's Warmest Year

The Detroit Area has set a new record for the warmest calendar year in its climate record, which dates back to 1874.  The record previously belonged to 1998.  That year featured the so-called "Climate Event of the Century" when a very intense el Nino developed in the tropical Pacific which significantly altered Northern Hemisphere weather patterns. This year is different in that there does not appear to be such a strong link to any single phenomenon. The Flint Area, which has a historical climate record dating to 1921, also had its warmest year on record while 2012 tied 1998 for warmest year in the Tri-Cities.

For Detroit, just to namr a few...

-Record-breaking March Heatwave. 6 consecutive 70°F+ days followed by 3 80°F+ days.

-Hitting 95°F on Memorial Day.

-July 4th Record Heat Followed By Severe Weather Outbreak. After hitting 102°F, we not only had several hailstorms develop late in the afyernoon but also a surprise squall line with damaging winds blast through during the overnight hours. Although it was one of, if not my favorite severe weather event ever, it was about the only severe weather highlight for Detroit in much of the 2012 summer.

Mine would be, in chronoligical order...

~Feb 10/11 arctic front passage, blizzard conditions

~March heatwave

~Economic impacts: March heatwave creating early buds, late April hard freezes, summer drought all disaster for farmers

~Having THREE 100F+ days at DTW

~Post-Christmas snowstorm

~Warmest year on record despite a full third of the year (Aug-Nov) averaging around normal

Top 5 things I won't forget about 2012...

1. March Warmth. I worked in Western Michigan it destroyed a lot Fruit fields out that way. Devasting for farmers

2. Heat wave in most of June/July, It was brutal working outdoors. Never forget that summer.

3. How I shoveled my driveway twice!

4. Constant above average temps. It "seemed" like it was above 90% of the time.

5. Hurricane Sandy. Winds were nuts even out this way. Rain/Sleet/Snow... Crazy event
