The high wind watch is now in effect from Friday afternoon

through Friday evening.

* Timing... Friday 11 am to 7 PM.

* Winds... west-northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph

possible.

* Impact... be prepared for the possibility of power outages...

and downed trees and large branches. Ensure loose objects on

your property are secured or brought inside.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous

58 mph or stronger may occur. Continue to monitor the latest

forecasts.

CLEARING IN THE WAKE OF THIS INITIAL BAND MAY ALLOW A WINDOW OF

OPPORTUNITY FOR PRE-FRONTAL SURFACE HEATING AND RENEWED CONVECTIVE

DEVELOPMENT DURING THE AFTERNOON FROM THE LEE OF THE CENTRAL

APPALACHIANS INTO THE NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC COAST...AIDED BY A

SECONDARY ZONE OF FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSAGE OF THE

MID-LEVEL TROUGH AXIS. HOWEVER...SOMEWHAT MODEST BOUNDARY LAYER

MOISTENING AND WEAK LAPSE RATES WITHIN/ABOVE THE WARM SECTOR MAY BE

PROBLEMATIC WITH RESPECT TO DESTABILIZATION. IT IS NOT EVEN CLEAR

THAT THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES WILL BECOME SUPPORTIVE OF CONVECTION

CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LIGHTNING...AND THUNDERSTORM PROBABILITIES

ALONG AND EAST OF THE APPALACHIANS IN GENERAL MAY NOT BE MUCH ABOVE

THE MINIMUM 10 PERCENT THRESHOLD FOR A THUNDER OUTLOOK.

REGARDLESS...GIVEN THE LARGE MAGNITUDE OF THE LOW-LEVEL AND DEEP

LAYER MEAN FLOW FIELDS...ANY WARM SECTOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT MAY

BE CAPABLE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE DOWNWARD TRANSFER OF HIGHER

MOMENTUM AIR TO THE SURFACE. CONVECTIVE ENHANCEMENT OF SURFACE

GUSTS TO SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGING SPEEDS SEEMS LIKELY TO REMAIN RATHER

SPARSE IN COVERAGE...SO SEVERE PROBABILITIES BELOW SLIGHT RISK

LEVELS HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED. BUT...THE THREAT AREA HAS BEEN

EXPANDED TO ENCOMPASS MUCH OF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD.

High winds suck...ok in TSTMS when they come and go, but high winds all day suck

Agreed.

It is the only weather phenomena that I don't like. Of course, since Thanksgiving that's all we've gotten.

Well, I do hate hot weather also - something else we had more than a season's worth in the last year, and am sure we'll have again this year.

Currently, 42F and light rain out here.

I think high winds are my least favorite. I don't mind hot days as long as they're few and far between. I'd go batsh-t crazy living in the Dakotas. Was bad enough in Texas.

I landed here in '04 after spending many years in the windy MN/Dakotas area. That August was really pleasant as far as DC goes, so my first real impression of east coast weather wasn't the heat/humidity, it was how damn still it was all of the time. A problem with the wind here is that it causes tree damage and power outages. That just does not happen in the plains/upper midwest because the trees are all pretty hardy (in the areas with trees, of course). The wind's big impact on me was on my golf game :)

i think it's fairly windy here, not as bad as this winter usually but it's not like we never get wind
