Central PA Late January Thread Part II

Heavy snow here...it looks like 4 inches on the ground, but I have no idea because the snow is blowing. Anyone else in York PA measured?

I am from York, PA and I have a few relatives telling me there is thundersnow... Missing the event entirely and returning for a home visit tomorrow!

It's too bad the storm has a slightly positive tilt at 500mb. It's going right with the flow of the atmosphere, however if it were negatively tilted we'd be getting this all night. This goes to show us that we need EVERYTHING to line up JUST right for major snows here.

It looks pretty negative to me honestly, the problem is its just trucking due to the fast flow in the northern stream. The next vort is acting as a kicker and instead of phasing its just pushing it east faster and out. If the northern stream wasnt flying as fast this would slow down but its a Nina. This is why its hard to get huge snows in this area in a strong Nina. THis almost maxed out this systems potential.

Anyone notice that the radar is drying up on the northern flank now as well. Quite a tongue of dry air just west of Scranton and building southward it would appear. To my untrained eye, everything is "starting" to consolidate toward the low.

TC on 16 had you in the 2-5 range. Fingers crossed for you!!

Thundersnow is occurring over York right now so areas to the north of that band are under an area of lesser upward motion (even sinking). There is a conservation principle here...adjacent to heavy snowbands (strong, upward motion) is usually an area of weak upward motion, so the lighter reflectivities just to the north of the band make sense.

What is that break line that shows up?
