I like your optimism. I'd really like to see few a more ticks north to get that level. I figure we have another 24-36 hours for some adjustments. -

He's getting so much crap for being disappointed. I kinda feel the way he does. I loved being on the northern fringe of this. That was a great spot for us. Is he being a bit excessive with it? Sure but everyone's reactions to him are worse imo. -

Pittsburgh/Western PA WINTER ‘25/‘26

I get the feeling that the sleet is going to sneak it's way up here at some point. We all know about that WTOD and how the models tend to underestimate it and some of the models are already showing it creep it's way toward us. Doesnt mean we still aren't going to get a lot of snow. But the sleet may cut it down some. Wouldn't surprise me if the NWS eventually changes their forecast from "Snow" to "Snow possibly mixed with sleet". Especially Pittsburgh and south. At least for Sunday or Sunday night. The North Hills and north seem to escape it more often. Hope I'm wrong. Just going by past history here. Sent from my SM-S931U using Tapatalk -

They're going with the nws. That's fine and I don't have any issue with that. I kind of like the bold call from the nws. I definitely disagree with them right now though but what do I know. -

FWIW TWC said 12 to 18 and any brief mixing will not affect snow totals. -
-35 to -40 dew points in heart of cold air mass in SK and MB would indicate potential for -40 to -45 F minimum temps in parts of ND and MN tomorrow morning, probably -30 to -35 F coldest spots in n WI. ... will guess -22F at Madison and -20F outside Chicago urban heat island. This will spread into MI and ON but Friday night will be coldest there. Fifty years ago I recorded -41F at a home weather station in central Ontario (Jan 22, 1976), it was so cold during the day (-20s F) that they had to send big tow trucks to start little tow trucks that were trying to start cars. And that was cars with block heaters. (my location was about 20 miles south of YQA).

I mean as of right now sleet is likely to cut down on totals for a large chunk of the subforum no matter what some of our posters say. -

Yes, the European (EURO/ECMWF) weather model successfully incorporated data from American Hurricane Hunter dropsondes for the major winter storm affecting the U.S. West Coast around January 20–22, 2026. Key Details on Data Integration: Active Assimilation: The 00z ECMWF run on January 20, 2026, was specifically noted as the first to incorporate the dropsonde data, which caused the model to "flinch" and adjust its forecast northward.
