You all look like you're in for a good MCS today. I'm out in Madison WI for the week so I'll miss it but hoping everyone can cash in on some widespread rain.- 1,795 replies

The only difference from an MCS and MCS is the extent, duration, and eccentricity of the very cold cloud top canopy. As for sensible wx, the both can produce high-end svr wx and unreal LTG displays!

Absolutely....you seem to be on the same page that I am. It's taking a valid element of the coming winter and just amplifying it. Like I said a few posts ago....valid pattern for an interval during the second half, but we aren't going to see that in the seasonal mean. -

Some useful terms for everyone to remember: MCC = Mesoscale Convective Complex (a specific type of MCS) MCS = Mesoscale Convective System (of which a derecho is one type of MCS). Derecho = a very intense MCS with damaging wind (long track and wide swath)

Glancing blow from first storm. .17 so far. Radar definitely looks better than short term models depicted earlier today.

6-8 incher in Feb 2016 along the Blacksburg to Lynchburg 460 stretch then crazy ice

Radar looks "meaty." Not only the SQLN but discrete cells forming just ahead. It does not look like it is gusting out yet which is good. I like the CU streaks on the VIS over the DC area.

Everyone west of 95 do you smell pine in the air. That was a telltale sign when the deracho was approaching. The smell was in the air well before the storms hit my location. Anyone experiencing that yet? .- 1,795 replies

The thunder last night was unbelievable, some of the loudest I can recall hearing. As for today, sun just started peeking out in Humboldt Park. Feels juicy out there. .
