Looks like a two day cold shot this weekend and then we warm up for days and days. Just enough of a tease for people to post pics of snowliage and snow guns blowing mice out, only to be replaced with shorts and flip flops early next week.

Wish the hard freeze would hold off longer. I still have a couple of unripe fruit on the trees.

Under -12C 850s on the gfs. Terrible.

didn't know anything about this place. turning the water off at the lake house Thursday and may need to stop on way home. I never go that far up 106 when coming/going from Jordan's Ice Cream which closed for the season on Sunday!

i'm always a little suss about those fast moving cold slicing waves like that.  often enough they prove to have been over amplified.   but like Scott just noted ... the ambient polar boundary appears to be gradient saturated so maybe this time we'll yo-yo 36 deg spanning 30 hours.

Friday could be interesting. Wind fields are strong. It's not out of the question there could be some strong winds if tstms form. Instability overall is lacking, but it is a dynamic system.

The CAA winds Saturday diminished some. Still could be 40 to maybe near 50mph.

Maybe a SYR special today?

Sucks instability on Friday will be limited because those are some insane dynamics and a vigorous shortwave approaching. Maybe get a risk for some strong storms along the coast where dews could sneak into the lower 60s.

But isn’t that exactly what October features most years?  I mean, who expects upper 40’s for highs for days and days in October? Nobody does.  This is October at its best…mild to warm some days, cool and crisp some days. Good Rainy days/systems too.  And even a good cold shot to boot. We take. We enjoy October.

It's kind of like March-alot of everything and often windy.

Yeah most years we are above normal.

Ya…some years/Octobers are warmer than others…obviously.  But my point was more like what Brian and Dave mentioned…. Shoulder seasons so to speak..transition time.  One season is waiting and another is taking over, and there are variations due to the conflict.

Plant trees that are appropriate for your climate.

Reliance peach is hardy to zone 5 and several friends here in the foothills grow them successfully.  Unfortunately, our rad pit microclimate is 4B; median for winter's coldest is -24.  We planted a Reliance soon after moving here in May 1998.  It would grow strongly then die back for 3 years, then 2001-02 never got colder than -12, avoiding the dieback.  That summer we had 100+ sweet peaches, then 2002-03 had a dozen mornings at -20 to -29.  The tree had died back to the ground then weakly sprouted from below the graft.  It died in August.  Tut fini.

I do. They’re growing pawpaws up into Minny and Quebec. But a lot of growers are having ripening issues due to some flower bud damage from the late April cold shot that came after a few days of 70s to 80.

And there’s a lot of solid peach options for the north now…cultivars that can handle -20s in winter that are also late blooming so they can avoid late spring freezes. They’re just not the ones you’d expect to see at a grocery store. Contender, Challenger, Intrepid, PF-24, Siberian C…heck even Redhaven is decent.
