Wow 5 degrees in NYC? Holy hell! The day after tomorrow is real!

Newark is lagging behind in the 90° day count for NJ due to the more frequent breezes off bay this summer. The excessive tree growth in NYC has artificially put them behind places like Baiting Hollow on Eastern Long Island and POU to the north. In the old days before the ASOS move to under the trees in 1995,  NYC would always have more 90° days than LGA and POU.

LGA is much more polluted by artificial  human structures as is Newark. You can see that with the artificially elevated mins at LGA and EWR was hotter even back in the 1990s. NYC and JFK give the most natural experience what the temperatures would be like without human engineering of the landscape. The 1990s were definitely hotter in terms of 90 degree days and length of heat waves.

Here it was a complete bust with cloudy skies all throughout the overnight hours. The peak was last night, but as you said there's another chance tonight. There's a pretty good 3 day window -- the night before and night after are usually 60 to 70% of the peak night, so still pretty good. Unfortunately we're expecting a good amount of clouds here tonight, but we'll see. If it's just partly cloudy I'll go out there tonight. It was pretty cloudy here the night of the 11th into the 12th too, so very bad luck during the 3 day period here. 

I know the Perseid is the most popular shower of the year because it's during the warm summer, but the Geminid shower in December is actually the best shower of the year -- slightly bigger than the Perseid shower. So I'll deal with being out there in cold weather if we have clear skies, especially after having such bad luck last night. 

Nothing last night the sky was always more than 50 percent cloud covered and there were only a few stars to be seen even in the small clear patches I think there was smoke in the air because the sky had an unnatural orange color and was bright as if the moon was causing it.

The Midwest is drowning in flooding right now. Excessive rainfall is far worse than drought. Once this unwanted el nino is finished I fully expect we will return to our dry pattern and next summer should be both hot and dry. My targets for JFK for next summer are 30 plus 90 degree days, 10 plus 95 degree days and 3 to 5 100 degree days.

UHI has been a factor in NYC since the 1890s. It gradually spread out into the other boroughs and nearby NJ from the 1930s to 1950s. So elevated minimums are nothing new in the heat island relative to the outlying areas.

But all areas have seen increasing minimum and maximum temperatures. The area on the average has seen many more 90° days since 2010 than at any other era. This is the first time the state of NJ away from the sea breeze has seen 9 consecutive years with over 30 days reaching 90°.

In past we would get fewer summers with so many 90° days. Back then cooler summers were in the mix with even the urban stations staying under 10 or 15 days every several years. We have to go back to 1996 for even most warm spots to have under 10 days reaching 90°.

You are definitely in a much cooler spot than much of the forum.
