i was being facetious lol.  I do remember somewhat frequent brownouts due to heat in the mid-late 1990s.

I should tell you sometime about all the acrobatics I went thru during the late 60's to construct a temperature measuring shelter to NWS standards!!

We cooked. 84 was the predicted high here today it’s 89 currently. Might close in on mid 90s tomorrow. Wed-Sat going to be brutal

For accuracy measuring the actual temperature, it is important. My station gets "sun soaked" briefly early afternoon this time of year, and I discard those readings.

I find the argument over how to measure temperature so interesting. A big point of my climate near the ground course was the idea of what makes a measure standard and for who is that standard useful. For instance, we take the 2m shade as our “normal” temperature measure. Yet, conditions near the ground are almost always subadabatic during daytime conditions and can be several degrees (even 10+ in extreme circumstances!) degrees C warmer closer to 1m and below. Not to mention we take the shaded measurement when midday in most environments (besides forest) sun is dominant. We also try to control environments to be flat and clear; meanwhile, the majority of lived places aren’t that! Of course, the 2m shade/open areas are the standard due to it accounting for variables, but too often we forget those complications exist in the first place. Makes me wonder if there should be “real feel” weather stations say 1.5m on the street of NYC or DC where people actually experience weather to best capture the experience of how weather impacts people.

I worked in an orchard picking apples and peaches that summer.  If I hadn't been 17 years old, I doubt I would have survived it.

 A few practical things to consider. Fundamentally temperature is a measure of the average(random) atomic kinetic energy of a substance. There is a sensor involved in this measurement- usually a Pt 100 RTD. It produces a predictable change in resistance with a change in temperature. Errors associated with this measurement include self heating(electrical current flowing through the resistance of the sensor = heat). Minor effect. Absorbing solar energy in direct sunlight has a similar effect- but it produces a more significant error(due to sensor heating) while measurement of actual air temperature is the objective. That can't be accomplished in direct sunlight. The 2 meter/in shade 'requirement' allows consistency in the measurement regardless of location. That became the standard. It could have easily been at some other level, but 2 meters off the ground is where we live. One of the topics I teach is temperature measurement for industrial processes- so I am a bit geeky about the topic lol.

Metrology is important(essential) to meteorology. Not sure that it is taught in a meteorology program(probably not), but imo it probably should be. If not, you can get a more profound understanding of some of the questions you seek by learning a bit more about it. Just a suggestion.

I was also 17. Skinny, 110 lbs, and allergic to hay. It was miserable. 

My older brother had it worse tho. He cut tobacco that summer in Calvert county. He’s still scarred.

My point and click now has 100 on Saturday, 96 on Sunday and 94 on Monday.  I had thought the worst of the heat was expected to subside by then.  Not surprised though.  July is gonna July.
