Isn't it believed to be poor mitigation or prevention by Canada mostly?  We had plenty of very dry periods before and this did not happen

actually can see the smoke in the air here in north central NJ - weird smell - what type of trees are burning up there in Canada ?
 

Typical boreal stuff like black spruce, red spruce, balsim fir and birch’s. Maybe a few hardwoods mixed in because it’s not that far north like sugar and red maple.

Wild lightning with that stray storm in south Ocean/Burlington Counties. Just keeps on back building too. Friend of mine on LBI had pea size hail.

I wonder how much of an effect all the particulates in the atmosphere from the wildfires have on lightning production

probably some big flooding going on there right now
