February Banter 2026

I want to take a moment and thank @katabatic for amazing hospitality and a truly fun trip out to Western MD and the Canaan Valley region, including a slide over into Davis, WV. 
 

That was such a fun day of friendship and loving every moment of winter. It was a truly deep winter day with temps in the upper teens to low 20’s with snow falling the entire day. Saw all of the intensities too from light flurries to heavy snow. The Arctic front capture is a moment I’ll never forget. That was absolutely wild. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen something like that. Likely since 2/14/15 up at college. Would do it again in a heart beat!! 
 

Thanks again @katabatic!! Now I have excuse to come up there since we never got a chance to eat at Englanders

At its core, this board does one thing: bring people together united by our love of weather who otherwise wouldn't know each other existed. You are a sterling (no pun intended) example of an awesome human being who happens to love weather. I had an amazing time staying up until 2 am talking about weather and appreciate your patience as I asked forty million questions about my passion, lake effect snow.  I am no met scientist and know my lane here and appreciate the fact you let me take a drive in yours. That intercept up at Keysers Ridge is on my short list of all time weather experiences. Heck, Justin Berk loved it and reposted a pic of us getting crushed! The mark of a good time is answering a single question: would you do it again? Hell yeah, times a thousand. My door is wide open for you any time, any day.

As usual the "drama" in this board is always just a new poster getting absolutely dogpiled by veterans for (not unreasonably) assuming that if Ji can do something, they can too.

The moderaters here do a great job removing bad posters but until they start following the same rules they enforce on others they will find there's an unending stream to replace them.

Or just literally amend the forum rules to say "these apply to new posters only". I'm serious, would reduce temper tantrums from new members if they knew this was the case going in.

Yeah, people are clearly losing it at this point,  and my post was actually some of the best analysis on there. 

I said the 6z GFS showed after cold, we warm and rain. And thats our climo. As it turns out, Im likely right. That wasn't a "whine" @CAPE Its called REALITY. Posting accumulation maps for the 200 hr AI ABCDFG. That is fantasy.

My prediction, winter is over as far as storms go. We just came out of historic cold and have 16 degrees and sleet to show for it. As far as climo goes, that is apparently a great winter for us. 

This hobby is cooked.

They don't. I've been in reeanctments as cold as -5 degrees and have been to events with 18 inches of new snow. The more crazy the weather is the better the event. 

In early Dec we did the 250th of Knox's Noble train. That was 3 days out in temps in the low 20's and at night in the teens. You want to feel pain- try it.

BTW being cold sucks, but its way better than being warm. You can always put on more laayers or find a fire to sit by. If you are hot, there is nothing you can do but suffer.

Except right now it’s not snowing for the opposite reason you said. But you don’t actually know enough or care enough for that to matter. For you all that matters is it’s not snowing. Not the why. Because you weren’t analyzing the specifics of this synoptic event you were just bitching about our unfavorable snow climo.  

 

And greyhat is a troll who is gaslighting everyone.  You know how I know…he has made the same “mistake” a dozen times.  He will take the warmest thermal plot he can find within 24 hours of a threat and post it.  The warmest model in a cycle or a panel that’s 24 hours after the snow threat when it’s warmed up…and he keeps doing that!  If it was an accident, if he just kept making mistakes because he is new, wouldn’t he sometimes accidentally post the coldest model or accidentally the right time?  No…because he is doing it on purpose and acting like he is just some newb who can’t help it.

Agree on Southern DE, they aren’t going to cash in very often. But Northern Delaware has 16 inches of snow already. Average is 18 to 20. It’s been a great winter so far so I’m not understanding all the frustration.

He is in southern Delaware. This next threat was never good for him. He is very transparent.

I care to a point; but im also not knowledgeable enough to understand certain differences. I still think relying on climo is FAR and above more accurate than getting invested in fantasy range model runs. We focus way too much on that stuff IMO. 

I knew in order to get more storms this year, we'd need to go against climo, and things would need to be historic. I was hoping for that. Afterall we had the historic cold, so why not the historic snow. It didn't work out.

So its back to climo. Where storms once every 10 years, and the only way I see snow is to chase (which I still plan to do before the season is over)

If the guy is indeed doing that stuff on purpose I'd agree he is trolling.

Here is the problem with what you’re doing. Yea…every single threat we identify at day 10 is likely to fail. And it’s not even close. Many of these we now are like 5-10% chances. So if you just follow climo and say it’s not gonna snow you’ll be right 90% of the time. But it also means you will miss every single time it does snow.  You’ll never accurately identify the “threat” for snow. Think of it like a tornado watch. I’ve been under one maybe a hundred times. Only once did a tornado end up affecting me. Did they mean the other 99 were a mistake?  No they were identifying the threat. If they went with climo theyd never issue a tornado watch and be right most of the time but catastrophically wrong when a tornado does hit!  
 

It’s also like sports. I could just say the Eagles won’t win the super bowl Every single year and I’d be right 95% of the time but what fun is that?

That fair- I certainly see the need for looking long range in certain circumstances. But if you are just a casual weenie looking for snow, looking beyond 3 days is probably just setting yourself for heartbreak.

Maybe that the difference, I get absolutely no pleasure in tracking long range rainstorms and SE ridges. None. Zero. I might as well just keeping hitting myself with a cattle prod. I guess you do get enjoyment in that. Obviously.

Sports is different. Even if the Eagles don't win the SB, I can still have tons of fun watching the games, and celebrating the smaller wins. 

For me there is no enjoyment out of tracking cold and dry, warm and wet, SE Ridges, 60 degrees, and rainstorms.

Doing better than me, and I traditionally have higher snow climo. I’m at just under 13” so far, normal is around 20-22”

I will say I do get enjoyment out of tracking Hurricanes though. The chances of impacts from one here are ridiculously small but its still fun to watch the plot twists with them. So i should stick to that.

Man, I’ve lurked and posted my opinions and observations since the Eastern days.  Never learned much past looking at the models taking them verbatim and reading the posts of more educated people than me. Never took the time, nor had it, to go any further. In my opinion this “hobby”, if you can call it that, is about the same it’s always been. Mostly “disappointments” in the same way that it’s disappointing when you loose a video game, and dramatic posts. I say all that to say this, I was to fuckin high last night to really grasp what was going on with Greyhat lol. It has been entertaining to catch up on it though. My take, alot of you guys take this shit and yourselves to seriously. We are just some ants on a molten ball of nickel covered in water and dirt.

On a lighter note in here...took these shots yesterday.  Yes, I went out in those conditions to do a little photography!!  First one is of a nearly completely frozen Rock Creek here in suburban MD (Rock Creek Trail, near Bethesda/Silver Spring).  Second one is a tree at the entrance of the Georgetown Prep school, I have always liked that tree, it's very stately-looking (black and white image)...

Yep! The concert we went to was so diverse age wise. Saw this one live and me and the Ms.J’s were both singing it. 
 

I have been to many concerts but the ones that I find the most memorable are the ones that are like a stage show. Beck, The Killers, Pulp and The Flaming Lips stand out for me. That being said David Bowie and The Cure shows were just jaw dropping musically.

I hope the newcomer doesn’t actually wanna be like Ji, because he gets savaged here more than any newcomer.  So if that’s the “something” they wanna do too, I’d advise against it myself.

You know I certainly had my doubts about her doing this...BUT at the same time I can understand why she did it. The poor lady has had her career derailed by injuries (I mean what is this, ACL #5???). She's gone out that way so many times...but knowing this was likely her last chance, she probably just wanted to go for broke and see if something magical happened.

in a technical sense you're right, because a newcomer that acted like Ji would probably get banned
