I was just a teenager then, but I remember the TV mets increasing totals beyond 18" during the storm.

Do you have sleet shoes, lol? The interesting thing about these sleet depictions over coastal CT....is how close it is to all snow. The sounding below is for our hood. Lower that h750 temp by .5c?, maybe .25c? And it is a whole different ballgame here.
mahk_webstah
28 minutes ago, weathafella said: I'm savoring this one-a throwback to my youth. The deep winter cold laying down the foundation with perfect timing. The classic cirrus gathering in the SW sky, the excitement of a big snow on the way. I grew up in the 1950s and early 60s. The 1950s were not so kind to snow lovers until the latter half of the decade. But my early years taught me to appreciate every aspect of the storm including the prodromal high paint brush cirrus. When i was 9 years old, I read a book entitled "All About the Weather" by ivan Ray Tannehill. He described a gathering storm similar to what we're hopefully about to experience. I'm quoting but entirely from memory: "It may be a clear cold day in winter whn you notice wispy high clouds in the sky to the west." I remember the line-"the wind whistles in the pines and roars in the eaves". Some of you older posters wil probably remember the same experience as me reading and validating what I was feeling......excitement...it was going to snow! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Ray_Tannehill Absolutely Jerry! That’s why I’m so looking forward to tomorrow up here. The morning will grow increasingly cloudy and it is bitter cold. We have about 6 inches of snow on the ground, which always makes the light seem richer, and it makes me happier. I will be getting my preparations done with the tractor and snowblower attachment and making sure I’ve packed as much wood as possible onto the porch and the wood box at some point around noon, I’ll start to watch the sky and look out the window constantly. I can’t wait to announce to my not even two year-old twins that it has started to snow. I don’t think they’re old enough to really care at this point lol, but I hope to do that for many years with them. A classic old school snowstorm is just what we need! This is basically a massive SWFE. We do get some coastal characteristics below about 800-850mb, but can’t really recall a similar system. Maybe Feb 5, 2014…that was a really juiced SWFE. Airmass wasn’t like this though. This airmass being so cold is what makes this one a different beast.

ORH_wxman
Just now, CT Valley Dryslot said: Could it be trying to model some CAD down the CT River valley? CAD wouldn’t really impact sleet vs snow. CAD will be lower level. It’s prob weird shaped because it’s marginal…the warm layer above 0C is prob very very thin so slightly different rates/dynamics might cause it to flip between snow and sleet at that point.

I had sent them an email 2 days ago warning them that the trees could become a hidden hazard under the snow, and that all the snow and ice would only make the trees heavier for pickup. I guess they got the message. Usually they pick up the trees the week following New Year's Day. Glad we dont live there. Traditionally we burn ours NYE.
