Central PA Winter 25/26 Discussion and Obs

Recommended Posts

ABC-27 just showed on their news some information in regard to our local Winter weather.

They had a graphic that said 8 of the last 10 Winters had below normal snowfall. I’m assuming they are using MDT stats.

CTP is showing that only 6 of the last 10 Winter seasons had below normal snow at MDT.

Maybe they are only using Dec to Feb which could skew it by not including November & March/April snow?

Below are the official seasonal numbers from CTP’s website for MDT seasonal snow for the last 10 seasons.

Hats off to penn waste. Trash pickup, already delayed for Christmas, was on time at 8am this morning. I remember talking one day at my bar to a worker who said they actually enjoyed mornings like these because no one was on the road. Still, hats off.

That usually means there’s a bird of prey nearby that they’re trying to drive away. Possibly an owl. It’s called mobbing.
We have multiple hawks near us from the west shore country club relatively near by. We also now have a bald eagle in the vicinity with its nest by the Conodoguinet Creek. I've seen and heard a great horned owl recently within a few blocks. The rabbit population here is a bit out of control so I'm happy for the big birds of prey.

With our 0.8" of sleet and ice yesterday our December snow total is now at 11.2" this is the 5th most in December in the 23 years I have been at this location. Temperatures today will struggle to get to freezing so be careful out there. We warm to near 40 degrees tomorrow and then turn unseasonably warm on Monday with highs into the middle 50's. To go along with the warmer temperatures rain will arrive tomorrow night and last into Monday. The cold returns by Monday night and we will end the days leading into the New Year with well below normal temperatures.

0.29" liquid and 0.25" ice accretion.  Roads might be fine (not so much here off the beaten path), but the driveway is solid ice and as the melting commences, that liquid is an excellent lubricant.  Pretty bad ice storm for these parts in my opinion!

I wonder if out like in Wyoming they ever had a real bad ice storm with like 0.50" of accretion followed by a Chinook wind that melted it all within an hour. Seems like a receipe for some flash flooding
