June 2025 discussion-obs: Summerlike

Recommended Posts

It will turn noticeably cooler for the weekend with temperatures reaching only the upper 60s in New York City. Showers and periods of rain are also likely during the weekend, especially Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Rainfall amounts will generally be light with most of the region seeing 0.25" or less rainfall. A few of the wetter spots could see around 0.50" of rain.

No exceptional heat appears likely through the first three weeks of June. However, a sustained peirod of above normal temperatures could develop starting late next week.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +0.4°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was 0.0°C for the week centered around June 4. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.23°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.07°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely continue through at least mid summer.

The SOI was -0.77 yesterday.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.528 today.

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 56% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal June (1991-2020 normal). June will likely finish with a mean temperature near 72.9° (0.9° above normal).

hopefully that sustained period of warmth will also be dry and not include any rainfall, Don.

forget sea breezes, a westerly wind, 101 degrees and a 45 dew point is far better and great running weather !

all a sea breeze does is make it more humid....

Sea breezes and ocean views are the prime reason that so many people love living near the shore. Back in my old hometown places on the Boardwalk are going for almost 5 million dollars.

It’s why so many people from NYC come out to Long Beach during the summer. Even the West End where houses used to sell for 50 thousand back in the 1970s is pushing almost 6 million to live on Reynolds Channel.

When I grew up in those days Long Beach was more like Coney Island with arcades and an amusement park on the Boardwalk. Now it has become one of the most in demand Long Island real estate markets.

101 is great running weather. What a joke.

Long Beach has made a huge comeback to it’s early 1900s heyday. Back when Reynolds built the gorgeous houses in the red brick street neighborhoods. With wrap around sleeping porches. Very much like other coastal towns (Atlantic city) it had a ruff patch mid century. I used to live in Monroe beach and my next door neighbor was an elderly women who had lived there since the 60s. She said during the 70/80s the complex had fallen into such disrepair the pool was filled with weeds and small trees. The boardwalk was known as an open air drug market. The great thing about modern Long Beach, even though it has gentrified it isn’t prohibitively expensive like some parts of Brooklyn. There are still affordable apartments available.
I’m in Pa right now but based on radar looks like the south shore is getting a real soaking right now.

It feels far more uncomfortable near the ocean with the higher humidity-- unless you go swimming of course.  For cooler nights I find the  mountains, in the Poconos it's much cooler at night and much easier to sleep.  If you want to go by comfort level, the temperatures at the ocean with a sea breeze don't mean much because the humidities are higher.  If you want real comfort you need elevation.

Fortunately I love heat so I loved Coney Island back in the 80s when we used to have actual heat.  My favorite summers baked at the beach  Going swimming was cool relief but as soon as I was out of the water I felt the hot embrace of the sun once again.

The reason I love Long Beach is because it's so close to the city and doesn't feel the sea breeze as much as say Fire Island or Montauk does.  SW winds only have a short trajectory over water so the influence is much less-- Atlantic Beach even better, I used to spend a lot of my summers there.

Yes it is, with dew points of 45, you clearly don't remember July 4, 2010.

and I'm glad we hit 90 Thursday, that was the best day of the entire summer!
