Northeast winds gusting to 35 to 50 mph will create significant areas of blowing and drifting snow and may cause some tree damage and sporadic power outages. Motorist can expect widespread visibilities of a quarter of a mile or less through mid afternoon, and at times down to near zero due to the heavy snow and blowing snow. They are certainly not foreign to snow, but this much snow at one time is way out of the norm for them. Most areas in the midwest have never seen 20-30 inches of snow from one storm during any month of the year. Minneapolis for example has only had 5 storms above 17 inches since they've kept records since the 1880's. NYC during the same time period has had 16 such storms. Newark is approaching its daily rainfall record for April 16. Other storm total figures include: LGA: 2.36" and NYC: 2.79". Both those locations have also received 2.00" or more rain today.
