It didn't take long for these 50's to do work on my snow pack and absolutely obliterate it. I figured with the polar air centered over the region, would at least help preserve for this mini thaw, but nope down to dirty parking lot piles.

1/2" of rain this evening, followed immediately by a plunge in temps to the low 20's, flash freeze looks imminent.

Something weird is going on at Waukegan.  The temp shot up to 64 degrees, which seems hard to believe.
Nothing else in the obs looks funky though

It's definitely incorrect. We opened a trouble ticket, removed it from HWR and a tech should be heading up there to fix it today because it was a highest priority trouble ticket.

Looking at 5 min obs, MLI dropped almost 15 degrees in about 15 minutes.

Yep, dramatic temp drop. Literally in the low 50s to 30s in minutes. Now looks like a decent period of moderate freezing rain, with some light snow to wrap things up this afternoon, along with a Flash freeze likely with all the water everywhere. Should be a fun afternoon commute.

The flash freeze didn’t work out last evening.

There was little post frontal precip, which allowed the ground to dry a bit before temps dropped even more. Guidance showed this was possible, showing less post frontal precip as the event got closer. Add that to the fact it was in the mid-upper 50’s for a while as well, so ground temps rose.
