October 2017 Discussion

Euro had 0.75-1” of rainfall for our area, and judging from radar, might get shutout today. Forecast had originally called for rain showers off and on all day long.

something  i thought was interesting the high for KCMI on 10/24 is only 80 degrees, from 1899. I’ve noticed 1899 has a lot of high records from September and October.

A lot of the precip for today/tonight has yet to develop.

Looks like a pretty good soaking once it gets going.  Looking at some short term trends, it seems like a slight westward adjustment if anything which may mean that the rains keep going around here without much of a break until tomorrow.

Yea, most guidance from last night really failed to show the development of the second wave for tonight.

Drove from Windsor, Ontario this morning back to west of Chicago this afternoon. Peaked at 77 in MI near the lakeshore around noon, crashed to 51 as I made my way through the Chicago metro.

Even with the cooldown, this is going to be quite the warm/wet combo month for many areas around the Lakes.

The last 9 days of the month will probably knock 2F or so off of current anomalies.

Holy chit!... This developing storm looks to be a doozy for the UP.  3-4 inches of rain expected here, winds gusting to 60 and the temp falling through the 30's tomorrow.  Beginning to believe there's a decent shot at several inches of snow here tomorrow night as well!  Nice Fall day on tap today to finish up some last minute fall cleanup and winter prep.

MQT highlights:

North winds will increase late tonight, with the strongest
gusts to 60 to 70 mph along Lake Superior Tuesday morning and
early afternoon. Elsewhere, the strongest winds will be 45 to
60 mph. Winds will gradually diminish Tuesday afternoon and
evening.

Downed trees and power lines are expected, likely resulting in
widespread power outages. Power may be out in some areas for an
extended period of time.

Superior:

WIND AND WAVES DURING THE STORM WARNING: EXPECT SUSTAINED
WINDS OF UP TO 47 KNOTS FROM THE NORTH...WITH GUSTS UP TO 66
KNOTS. THE LARGEST EXPECTED SIGNIFICANT WAVES WILL BE 25 FEET
WITH A MAXIMUM WAVE HEIGHT OF UP TO 37 FEET POSSIBLE.

Not really sure what to expect here later tonight/tomorrow.  Last night's 00z runs were pretty unanimous with this area picking up 0.50-0.75" from the wrap around precip.  This morning's runs have shifted east, although the HRRRx still has things a bit further west.  Temp profiles aren't all that far away from being able to produce snowfall.  3km NAM has shown a few pockets where heavier precip has cooled the column enough to allow flakes to reach the surface in IL tomorrow morning.

1.39” of rain since last night, brings my monthly total up to 5.93” for the month. Tomorrow going to be a clasic late October day, blustery, overcast, and highs struggling to reach the mid 50’s.

Brace yourselves winter is coming.

As of last hour, ORD is up to 7.79" of precip on the month.

This makes it the 4th wettest Oct on record. With more rain expected this week and upcoming weekend, should make it up to 2nd wettest.

Bit of an unusual wind direction for winds that strong, trees usually don't like that. I would probably be concerned about some trees coming down especially if the maximum winds are realized.
