The one thing they did right is make an excellent plasma TV. I have 2 of them. My big panel is 6 years old and the picture is still perfect. I'm going to be sad when it dies.

I bought a 53 inch tv in 2004 and I'm praying for it to die but it still works awesome:(

Lol. I know the 4k tvs are sick nowadays but plasmas blew away any lcd during the rise of the big screen. But they were like nuclear power. Unpopular for dumb reasons.

Blizzards at night look incredible with plasmas too. Haha

Getting real tired of the subtle jabs at the weather service by CWG.  Congress has made it clear funding NOAA/NWS properly isn't one of their priorities...not much NOAA/NWS can do about that.

And of course Panasonic is starting from the dynamical core of the GFS, which in its own right is probably a 9-digit investment by the public, through NOAA and others.

This.  Open source sharing of code developed using taxpayer $$ is the right thing to do and maximizes that investment, even if private industry benefits.  Heck there's even GFS code running in the Euro.  It makes complete sense that technological advancement would follow the same principles as scientific advancements:  that the incremental advancement of the discipline stands on the shoulders of those before us.

I went the LCD route (before going LED) since I was scared of burn-in.  Also liked less power consumption.  Both were light-year jumps from tubes.

I got a 4K over Christmas, and I've got to say my eyes can't detect the difference, even bought a 4K upscaling Blue-Ray to go with it.  At some point, the resolution gains become theoretical and not practical.  Maybe for someone with keener eyes than mine.  I mainly just bought the TV to replace the only TV of ours that wasn't Smart, and because Costco had a nice sale going.  We decided to cut our DirectTV and solely use Netflix.  7 or 8 months of no DirectTV bill pays for the TV.

I'm just now getting to read into this. My question is how is there no lawsuit yet? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt the GFS code is actually public open source. The data of course can be accessed publicly, but is the code not protected??

Here's the code:

Here's the run instructions for developers:

This is the way taxpayer-funded code development is supposed to work.  The Commerce CIO, Steve Cooper, agrees.  I agree.  I'm a Fed CIO as well and eat my own dog food:  http://open.gsa.gov/

Disclaimers in my signature below apply, of course...
