December 2014 General Discussion

1911-12 was known here as a brutal winter, and its always forgotten than December was so mild. November was very cold (almost identical to Nov 2014 in fact), December was very mild, and then January-April were brutally cold, especially Jan & Feb. Snowfall was well above normal too.

1923-24 on the other hand...November was seasonable (not very cold like 2014), and December was an absolute torch (of which I do not see 2014 as such)....then Jan-Apr was colder than normal every month, not extreme, but certainly colder than normal. Snowfall was slightly below normal. Not saying it cant be an analog, but sensible weather doesnt seem to be a match so far.

Do you see 1911-1912 as a possible analog?

I am not good with analogs lol...I am good at analyzing the hell out of WHAT happened in the past, not WHY it happened. I rely on others to name the analogs, then I go to work . I had heard 1911-12 mentioned in here thats why I brought it up. And to be honest, I just dont see a 1923- type torch in December. It would take a lot more than a 5-day inferno (on the longrange ensembles no less) to make the monthly mean be so warm (as it was in 1923). Dec 1923 is the 4th warmest on record.

In fact, its funny to look at....the top 4 warmest Decembers are well before my time

1.) 1881 (40.6F)

2.) 1889 (39.2F)

3.) 1877 (38.1F)

4.) 1923 (37.7F)

5.) 2006 (37.4F)

avg 30.1F

I'm hoping this December will be more along the lines of 1977, followed by a January like 1994 and a February like 1934.
